Q6600 vs. E8400 for my needs

I love both chips, but or my primary workstation the e8400 gets the nod. For what you use your system for, the e8400 should work just fine.

OC for my E8400

Take your time in OC'ing that chip. A lot of people make the mistake of pushing their FSB too fast. For me: Default 3.0 GHz = 1.056v (333x9) 4.0 GHz = 1.256v (500*8) 4.2 GHz = 1.276v (465*9)

RAID results

The results you posted seem a bit low for a 3 disk array. What controller are you using? Myself, I'm running into problems because I seem to have maxed out the ICH9R on my motherboard. 4 drive RAID seems smooth, but 6 drive RAID really seems off. 4 drives Minimum 268.2 MB/s Maximum...

i have a p5bd + 6400 upgrade now?

The P5B Dlx is still a great board. If you want the best price vs. performance boost, I'd update to the latest BIOS and install a Q6600. The X38 and X48 chipsets are great, but there is too little an difference between the Q6600 and Q9450 to justify the additional cost of a motherboard...

can dell's overclock?

If someone buys a Dell instead of biulding their own, should they really be doing stuff like BSEL mods? Will they have the resources and tools necessary to make it happen? If they can't put together their own system, should they be voiding their warranty, tearing apart their system and risking...

E8400/Q6600 with DDR-800?

huh? AMD owned it all back in the days of Socket-A, but those days are long gone! I was once a huge fan of AMD, but to be blunt, an overclocked AMD chip can barely hold its own against a Intel chip at default. Intel owns the overclocking chips now... Example: My E6420 is overclocked...

E8400 New Build

I'm not sure how the OCZ DDR2-800 runs in that board. (The P5E is basically the same as my Maximus Formula boards) Something to consider is a couple of sticks of Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1066. They're $15 more than the OCZ sticks, but come with a $20 mail in rebate which makes them cheaper...

E8400 New Build

The 512MB EVGA 8800GT SC is a great card. I bought the SC that was clocked at 650core/1900mem, then cross flashed it with the SSC BIOS effectively turning it into a 8800GT SSC running at 700core/2000mem. Even after that, my card had enough headroom left to overclock even further to...

RAID 0 with two WD 320GB HDs

Although I'm a RAID junkie, I'm not sure about using mismatched drives. I've always used matched drives, and with the exception of when my old Nvidia board died, I've never had a broken stripe issue. (10+ years) If I remember correctly the DQ6 has a ICH8R southbridge, so RAID performance...

Reboot while overclocking?

Seems like your voltages are really high. My Q6600 G0 will do 400*9 or 445*8 @ 1.42v, however if I try to push it to 450*8 I need to up the voltage to 1.5v or more just to get it stable. The additional speed isn't worth the additional heat and wear-n-tear on my Q6600.

Which chipset and which brand?

Though it's not necessarily a "cutting edge" board, you may want to consider the Asus P5K Deluxe wifi board. It'll run the Q6600 and is compatible with DDR2. If you want to go with an X48 board (WHICH ISN'T EVEN AVAILABLE YET), you'll have to add DDR3, which isn't cheap. GOOD LUCK!
