Threadripper BUILDERS thread

What are your experiences so far with regard to memory? Going with 3200CL14 vs 3600CL16 for maximum 256 or 128 GB? Can 3990X or 3970X run 3600CL16 reliably? Is it worth going for 3600 to speed up the IF? Or 3200 will be maximum for 8 DIMMs anyway so shouldn't bother?

Yeah, forgot I used that one with my X99. Good temps. Any suggestion? Or should I go for some full size block from EKWB or something like that?

So that Kraken is a good alternative? Great! Because, TitanX has a lot of untamed power. Does it cover VRAM and VRM good?

Even more - I'll strip those of their stock coolers and put either Accelero Extreme IV or water block... Just wasn't sure if those actually have diff. power components, etc.

I don't see what would I trade a Titan X for? 980Ti won't eat up into it and frankly, until next chip I don't see anything Nvidia could throw up. Can't trade it for 390X sure that. :P Still. Maybe I could trade in normal for water-cooled Kingpin that is coming. :P

Well, here in UK, Amazon gives everyone 1y of support and warranty, no matter the brand. Asus sells for 930 GBP, Palit for 850 GBP, EVGA for 890GBP... so difference is like 80GBP and that is 120 USD difference... Quite enough to buy Accellero IV for it two times and get some more juice.

I'm curious - if all TitanXes are made identical and just sticker applied, why do Asus or EVGA sell their stock (basic) TitanX for as much as 15% more than Palit, for example. Those are all hardware identical quality PCB and components, right?

What combination to go for 5960X?

That is why I ask. I've read all reviews: 5960X should go 4.0 without a problem, even a bad batch. H105 cools it fine, I guess H110 is even better. And then, well, NZXT H440 airflow is probably less than ideal like R4 I presume... About board, yeah, might be an overkill, but can't hurt to...

What combination to go for 5960X?

What bothers me... is to go: X99 Deluxe + H105 + NZXT H440 or R4 or Rampage V (EATX) + H110 + no idea what case to take then... Need it to be as quiet as possible, but also want best performance for 5960X @ 4,0+... NZXT H440 was mentioned for "bad airflow", R4 is praised all around for...

Rampage V Extreme vs X99 Deluxe...

Considering performance and stability, how good is MSI SOC Force? Or that X99 SLI Plus? I like the bootability of my soon-to-have XP941. Not sure if other vendors support it?

I'm using Intel 160 GB G2s already. Just need more SSDs since I want to replace Velociraptors and classics (6 of those). Nehalm was fantastic (before i7-975 I was at Q6600) and XE one is very nifty. But Asus board (R2E ROG) gives me hard time sometimes with OSX. That is why I'm actually...

Yes I see. Considering the CPU, I'm sitting on i7-975XE which is quite nice to be honest. Got it for a fraction of it's retail price (the same as 920 was at that time). I AM thinking of replacing it with 3770 but only to swap for a Gigabyte board and a newer platform with SATA 3, USB 3 and PCI-E...

Yes, that is why it is a hard choice for me. I need an SSD that is reliable and performs the best it can within environment I create - which is "seeks, very small files, many of those". A 500MB project with tens of thousands of small files. Can't really profit from RAID0 and high sequential...

AMD Radeon 3870x2 sanity check comment

It is worth mentioning that running in a window did hurt framerate as compared to running the game full screen. AMD has pushed the fact that their new hardware is capable of fully accelerating windowed 3D based on how it manages clock speed with respect to work load, so we aren't quite sure why...

RAID 0 or RAID 0+1 for programming workstation

I know how RAID work in both cases. Well, I'm concerned with speed which, by my tests, is improved greately in RAID arrays (either 10 or 0, I've tested both). Still, I'm a bit concerned with statement that RAID 0 could be actually slower than RAID 0+1...

OK, I have Gigabyte X38-DQ6 with ICH9R intel controller. It supports up to 6 drives in RAID 0. One strange thing is that it has a strange option: In the menu it says: "RAID 10 (0+1)" but in the description it says: "Mirrors and then stripes" for the very same option. So, I wonder which...
