Old laptop with a port cover that I removed to uncover what appears to be a mini PICe port. Not sure if I can change title
Does having the port automatically mean it will support a mini PCIe ssd? If not, how can I check? Would it be possible to check if it supports mSATA also?
Can't find any...
There are better models and worse models.
For example, this model is rated pretty well at a nice price. Just wish they continued with smaller models when everyone else went small.

I had a tendered to USPS package that arrived at an office the other side of town, showed as "Out for delivery" but failed. Took another week before they routed it to a slightly closer office and...
Side button placement in general is hit and miss for each person as everyone's hand is slightly different. With most mice, it seems the front is a tad tall too tall so my ring finger is draped over the side and exerts some pressure on the side, an unfortunate design if there were side buttons on...
Interesting. I haven't been on these forums much lately but would've recommended the green on black VFD as opposed to the black/grey/white on blue, which are slow and cheap. It's cool and all, especially when included with an aluminum HTPC case for $40 after rebate but its viewing angles...
My 2nd gen i3 Dell Inspiron 14z gets 7hr with wifi and min brightness. 8hr wifi off. Don't know how different 3rd gen core i based 14z is. The 13" Vostro with same battery was just as efficient if I recall so slightly longer battery life due to smaller format.
But yea... tablets are probably...
USB3 version of Challenger is a good buy at $40 right now. Builder friend uses it for his own budget case.

However, you'd want at least at least a 60gb SSD to make it useful anyway. I supposed you could get away with 32GB...
There's no "correct order". It's just that installing Win 7 on UEFI (and maybe Win 8) requires extra work that wasn't documented anywhere on Microsoft's sites & forums that I could find.
What open-source software are you using to acquire the start button? I found something that was intriguing...
Ahh... finally found my own answer. I knew it was something to do with UEFI. And yes, unetbootin should be able to create any bootable USB.
I had found a thread with details about the EFI\Boot files but this is the first time I've seen the part about dismounting the wimfile. For any that run...
Yes, that was one of the things I found through google. Turned it off and neither mounting in Win 8 (same error) nor booting from USB worked. Tried 2.0 & 3.0 ports but neither found anything (saw flash drive LED solid on for a few seconds) before booting into Win 8.
Just remembered someone...
Not according to some online. I have not found a single case where someone installed Windows 7 after Windows 8. Someone had upgraded to Win 8, backed up, reformatted, re-installed Win 7, restored Win 8 and used EasyBCD to get both OS to show.
I can't get Win 7 to install. Using the ISO in Win 8...
Long story short, attempted to create Recovery disk from a new Win 8 laptop on my external hard drive in an unallocated space. Not only did it somehow fail, now my TB drive is completely unallocated. I'm guessing Windows 8 file system screwed it up.
I'm using Minitool Partition Recovery and...
Have a new Win 8 laptop and would like to dual boot Win 7 as well. No optical drive and only a recovery partition. Google only turned up one post saying the file system is incompatible so it's necessary to install Win 7 and then Win 8. But I don't have any media to reinstall Win 8 with unless...
Yea, seems as if you can buy online through the link I posted at $900 price. Even if shipping were a bit extra, it's still a great deal. And it was sold out before only an hour or so after I posted it in another thread here so I would hop on that deal ASAP.
Biggest plus is actually the mSATA...

Maybe... Supposedly, leaks are pointing to Q2 (March-June, so most likely June) but you never know when something's going to be delayed, say until August when back to school shopping starts. Make sure to hit a Microsoft store as they seem to have a wider variety of laptops and higher quality...

Get whatever kit is cheapest with good ratings at 1600 speed (may want to look into 16gb kits as those may just be $20 more).
If you don't need nvidia...
Yes, the video card is weak. And the power supply is an important part that powers & protects all your components so you better be sure it's a quality brand & model if it's a custom-built system.
Ah... I see it's xtremegear, the 700w base PSU is probably fairly inefficient and a single GPU...
Another vote for w520.
Otherwise, just search for 32gb on

11.5" for gaming is pitiful. DDR3 version of 650m is also barely better than 640m.

i5 will. Insert_Nickname has boasted of his Celeron before and it's not even HD 2000 as it's based on the previous generation. Previous generation's integrated graphics included HD 2000 and the higher HD 3000. Current generation's 2500 and 4000 are faster than the previous. Ivy Bridge Processors...
Yup, I could stream 720p and dual screen with core 2 platform laptops and Intel IGP is way better now. Surprisingly, ATi's IGP was giving me artifacts back in the days instead.
mhmm... cheapest is the 500w model actually for $50-$20 rebate.
Agree on motherboard & power supply suggestions by Termie. I've heard plenty of bad power supply stories. Also keep the computer on a surge protector.
DVD burners aren't really worth it these days. I'm sure there'll be a $50 Blu ray burner this Black Friday considering it was only $60 last...
That PSU is $5 cheaper and higher wattage rating from the same line. RAM is cheapest 16GB 1600MHZ with good timings. Both have promo codes that expire in 3 days though...
AMD is a budget option if you can pick up older CPUs for $50. However, she's not near a computer store with amazing combo deals. Also, current generation of AMD CPUs just can't match Intel at their price points. Trinity can't outpace i3 and Piledriver can't match i5.
She's not near a computer...
Don't recommend AMD. They are either slower and consume more power at same price or cost more and consume more power at a higher price.
Integrated graphics has come a long way and should be able to do the everyday things just fine. I can stream (flash) on 2 screens with my i3 Sandy Bridge...
$800-900 is plenty.
Ivy Bridge is actually capable of three displays provided the motherboard has displayport, which is required for the 3rd output and ups the cost of the motherboard a bit. Also, you'll want to get a motherboard with 4 RAM slots as opposed to the 2 on the board Termie linked...
5450 almost certainly doesn't have the ability to output to 3 displays. Usually, the low-end cards only come with HDMI, DVI & VGA/DVI for the 3rd and the HDMI and one of the DVI are the same.
Either way ddr2 gpu is ridiculously backwards so you should find something that's ddr3 or gddr5...
ElFenix hit pretty much everything although ram is where you can get any brand and GSkill has been popular and on sale lately. Anything that's 1600 speed or faster and decent reviews will do although this set appears to be crazy cheap right now...
