Surface Pro 2 is incredible

Buy the Wacom Bamboo Feel stylus, and then use the soft (felt) nib. Sample... For those who are wondering: yes, that's my friggin' handwriting and all. I wrote most of that in portrait as well. 16:9 or not, this thing has been SOLID for handwriting and sketching.

No problem! My main beef with the device was with battery life as well, but since I'm getting consistently 4-5 hours of heavy Photoshop and OneNote action, I can't quite complain. I'll wait and see if the Haswell version delivers on its battery life estimates (it has to be at least 7 hours...

Because the future doesn't look like it's going to be much different. Surface Pro 2 with Haswell shows 7 hours of run time. That's not unexpected at all because in the end, the screen still consumes a fair amount of power. And if you want to compare, again, run Photoshop on the Haswell MBA...

No. But it's comparable to Ivy Bridge Air. At least the 11.6" model. You're the one suggesting the MacBook Air can "easily" beat that battery life figure, with which I disagree because I have handled almost every generation since 2010, and the 11.6" model is hardly anything to write home...

It's IntoCircuit. Technically it should charge the Surface Pro about 1.5 times, but I've found that it can only reliably push another full charge over. Not an issue either way. I must say... doubling the battery life of the Surface Pro is already more than enough for me to get by. Well...

Make a new Power Profile with the "Power Saver" profile as the base. Make sure everything else is set to maximum power saving. And then set minimum processor state to 0%. You can leave maximum processor state at anything. I leave mine at 100% just because I figure I may need that extra headroom...

If you downclock the CPU, you still get respectable performance, and the battery can last 5-6 hours instead of the usual 4. If all else fails, you can get an external battery pack from IntoCircuit that can charge the Surface Pro up to 2 times (more like 1.5) and extend runtime to 10-14 hours...

I'm not sure you're getting me there. You can plug a Cintiq into a tablet PC, and it would work better than the built-in digitizer of that tablet PC. You don't need a full-size computer to realize the benefit of a better digitizer. Though enough processing power to not make the experience...

Actually, even when the application is "HiDPI aware", there is still scaling going on in software. Weird, right? Basically, it is as TheStu has explained. No matter what the application does, OSX only gives out the scaled resolution of 1440x900 or 1280x800, and not 2880x1800 or 2560x1600...

I have also tried Galaxy Note devices. And I must say... for writing, you should actually avoid them. Screen size aside, there is always a slight lag for each stroke when you write at much faster speed... just because the CPU can't keep up. The best tablet device for writing I have worked with...

GPU Throttling on Macbook Pro 9,1 [Mostly Solved]

Did you check CPU temperature? Since both CPU and GPU are cooled by the same heat pipe on the motherboard, and they are relatively close to each other, the system may have mistakenly detected that temperature was too high around that region and throttled the GPU in favor of keeping CPU...

Agreed. I like the responsiveness of the iOS keyboard. I can type on it super fast and accurate without any autocorrection whatsoever (seriously). Android's keyboards are not as responsive (hardware touchscreen problem, not a fault of the software platform), but they offer far more layout...

Do Newer Macs Have Better H.264 Decode Acceleration?

Yeah, 4K h.264 videos are hardware accelerated on my 2012 Retina MacBook. I couldn't play any 4K video clip on my 2010 MacBook Air, so my assumption is that anything made before that would run into the same problem. So yeah, newer Macs do have better h.264 decode acceleration.

Depending on which Haswell IGP you are talking about. Tom's Hardware benchmarked the low-end one to be only about 20% faster than the current HD 4000. But even if we were talking about the high-end IGP, it's still not 650 performance, because Intel showed a game running without framerates...

Actually, you can't wiggle much with the 74WHr battery in the 13" Retina because of the screen. The screen sucks harder than a starved vampire. Depending on screen brightness, I can have my 15" Retina lasting anywhere between 5 to 10 hours. And that's just doing text editing.

IMO, 4th gen is indeed faster. However, neither holds a candle to the iPhone 5 in terms of performance. Most likely due to the significantly higher pixel count that they have to push.

Surface Pro: Underclocking to increase battery life?

Actually, on an x86 device, it's the CPU that east up more battery than anything else. A screen on average consumes about 2.5W, but the CPU and chipset will happily gorge 5-10W. It's doubly true as Intel moves closer to a true SoC solution.

That's the correct formula. f/4.0 and f/2.8 are actually denoting the radius. Focal length is not radius (unless it's a f/1.0 lens).

I think the basic conclusion is... since the focal length is effectively longer (because the image is cropped) but with the same DOF (from the photographer's point of view), scaling should apply to aperture as well. Otherwise, 90mm f/1.8 is razor thin DOF in full-frame's term.
