flashing bios question

I've run into the exact same problem and had to use an older flash program than AMINF342.exe to get around it. I believe it was AMInf336.exe to flash it. I think it has to do with the utility can't read from the ROM chip to compare size, checksum, etc. and hangs there. Try using...

computer POST very slow

This might not help but did you make sure the jumper on the hard disk is set properly to master or slave? Sometimes, if it's set to slave and no master is present, the BIOS will wait for a pre-determiend time for the master to detect and then move on to the slave drive and initialize that one...

Can I plug a firwire cable to USB port?

Perry404 is right. I've had many ASUS boards which used the same pin-outs for firewire & USB headers. If you do plug the firewire into a USB heasder, you will definitely fry the USB ports and possibly damage your mainboard beyond usability. Many manuals warn against doing this.

Obviously, trying to reset the CMOS is where you should start. Also insert only 1 stick of RAM into the slot closest to the chipset until you get a boot screen. Test each additional stick separately until you find the bad one using Memtest86. I think you have degrading RAM on your hands...

How to reset BIOS

Silly Question: Did you unplug the machine, pop the case side off and physically short the clear CMOS jumper to return to defaults? If not try that first before panicking and start the machine back up. If you have tried taht with no luck, let us know so we can move on to the next step.

Your mainboard manual should have a layout diagram and will point out any serial port headers you may have. If none are shown, then you don't have any other option but to buy a serial port PCI card and install it.
