Win XP kick off

One of our win xp machines in a remote office kicks the user off or rather wont let him access anything after 6:30pm. Checked server settings and they look fine. He can't even start up word, loses network connection and ip address. Any clues where to start looking?

calcs come real close (had a couple of smarter people do them for me). Looks like I am on the edge. Haven't found a single PSU more than a 660 from enermax and it isn't a true 660, actually 480 and 220 or something like that. Can you run multiple psu's? need options -Thanks

found the answer over at planetamd64.com. There is a beta driver for the sata raid controler that you need. set the controler to raid in the bios (even if there is just one drive) set up the array, download the driver, run thought the windows setup and it should work. On my set-up, I hit F6...

Asus SK8N XP64 Sata

Trying to load the XP64 beta on a computer with wd 80gb Sata drive on a Asus SK8N mb. Bios sees the drive, run through set-up, hit F6, put in the floppy, select the driver, get a message - The file \\WinXP\AlSata.sys is corrupt. Tried different floppies, reformated them, drivers off the MB CD...

What do I use to view it? History has not been cleared as I can see it when logged as the user.

Win2k, I know where the directory is but it is "special". If your not logged on as that user, it just appears to be dat files. How do I view the info after copied?

Difference between 3COM 3C905B-TX and 3C905CX-TXM / 3C905C-TXM ?

From looking at them, the "C" is a lot smaller, smaller chips and fewer chips. Perform basicly the same, haven't had any problems with them. Not sure the differences between the 2 c's. Have you checked 3-Com's site?

Your network set-up right? Can you see files on the other computer? Sounds like they might not be on the same network.

A7N8X networking.........??

Need more info. What type of connection? If DSL/Cable, easiest way to go is a router that likes the service you connect to. You can use both nic's in the first computer, basicly setting up a firewall or proxy server but dougt WinXP would allow that. Don't know XP myself.

a7m266-d Harddrive

Motherboard stoped recognizing the harddrive this morning, 60gb IBM. Put an 80gb wd drive in it and wont see it either when it posts, but win2k set-up sees it. Put the IBM back on it, it sees it but gives and I\O error trying to read. Any clues? Motherboard is a week old with 2 1900+ MPs.

Poll: W2K Users: Do you like SP3?

It isn't all that clean. In our networked environment, it has caused network slowdowns on some machines. Some software and hardware seems to react poorly to it. MS already has some unreleased hot fixes for it. Also there are hint of sp4 out there. (Remember Nt service packs?)

HELP

If it is just a 2 pc network, why use DHCP? Set 1 ip to 10.0.0.1 and the other to 10.0.0.2, and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Default gateway will be whichever computer has the internet access. This will rule out one area for errors to creap in.

Limit to cat5 length?

I had a simmalr problem - after several reboots and messing around, it started to work. Max cable length is some where around 300 feet.

VPN and Windows XP

I think getting away from MS VPN is the best solution as you don't know what artifical restrictions have been inbedded in the OS to generate revenue. Short of that, I had to set up a LMSTATS file to get name resolution across our vpn. Don't know if that will help you but is pretty easy. Do a...

SonicWALL / VPN

I've established the VPN connection with the client and can find computers, but only searching by ip address, can't get name resolution. Seams to be a Win2000 issue. Any ideas?

router with vpn for a small company

Another reason to go with a firewall / vpn is you are not tied to your isp's hardware. With a firewall, you can cange your service and not loose all of your set-up. Last year, when our dsl got dumped, we lost our vpn set-up and the new isp wasn't compatable with the netopias we owned. Invest...

When you shared the printer, did you share the driver as well? Make sure you are using the same driver on the NT machine and the clients (Operating sys oppropiate). What network protacals are you using? Try deleting the share and removing the clients driver. Share the driver from the NT...

Problems Printing from IE 5.5

Verify that you are printing to the right devise. IE5.5 keeps it's own set a print prefferences. Evidently not fully integrated enough. Also go through the page set-up and make sure some strange setting didn't turn itself on. Seems obvious but this is ussually what I see getting screwed up.

Yes, the wire that came with the card. I thought it needed that to keep power, but may be mistaken.

The power on the compter is off? Are they set for a "boot from lan" option? That would keep them powered. Probably a switch in the bios to disable. I know with 3com cards, if you hook up the jumper wire, they do that. I think removing the wire also would get them to power down.

Is RAS Right For Me?

I would think a VPN solution would be a good way to go. Not familure with your set-up but there are both software and hardware solutions available. Your current router may even have a solution built in. This would utilize the exisiting internet connections and wouldn't tie up the phone...

Coax and I had a falling out a couple of years ago. Anyway, we're trying to achieve 100mb full duplex. Am looking @ Linksys EtherFast 5-port 100BASE-TX Hub (fehub05W) but can't confirm it is full duplex. I've always heard people talk about repeaters but have never found one.

I need to exteend a network past the Cat5 limit, maybe 500 feet or more. We have a very convoluted route to get where we need to go. Is installing intermediate hubs my best solution or is there another way I should look at? Suggestions on hardware?:D Thanks - Hermann

Some Lan to Lan VPN questions. How to connect PCs at site 1 to PCs at site 2?

Go with a hardware vpn solution like a router or firewall package. It will be a lot easier to set-up and manage and will actually work right. We used the sonicwall Firewll solution. Works great!
