Thanks everyone for your replies. Is there an RFC or IEEE spec that specifically states this?
I have always thought 1 meter was the minimum but I can't actually find an official spec that states this.
Hi,
I've been searching a bit on the internet and get some conflicting information that I hope someone can clear up for me.
Is there a minimum length for Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6 patch cables?
Is there a minimum length of cable required between nodes (IE a router plugging into a switch)...
This is also a possibility but you then have to have that PC on anytime you wanted to print. That may or may not be a problem.
Jack's solution is what I would recommend as well, and eliminates the requirement to have the PC the printer is connected to turned on.
Get a matching pair of one of these

preferably the 5Ghz. 60-75 bucks an end.
Mount those to a J poll like these http://ubnt.ca/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=15

When talking about MIMO radios, Companies advertise the total speed of the radio added together.
AP----150Mbps----->Bridge
AP<---150Mbps------Brdige
To the bridge is 150Mbps and the return path which doesn't use the same path is also 150Mbps thus your 300Mbps of bandwidth. That is the...
OP Read http://tomatousb.org/tut:using-tomato-s-qos-system
Near the end it shows a SS with the ability to set differant download rates for IP/mac address. This may be helpful to you.
No you cannot.
I know there is an option in most SOHO routers and even in DD-WRT where you it says you can throttle your incoming connection. "Throttling" at this point along the path back to his house is pointless. Because at this point most people will have a 100Mbps internal network or even...
When trying to implement QoS you must realise you can only influence data you have control of. You can only apply QoS to data going out to the internet (outgoing). This in turn does have an effect on incoming traffic. However, when it comes to streaming there isn't much outgoing traffic to apply...
I have an internal network that is 802.1x. Uses Radius to point to a specific group.
I also have an outside network that is being used and abused.
I want to put captive portal and authenticate using LDAP.
Hi Guys,
Has anyone implemented a captive portal solution? If so, did you authenticate using LDAP?
I want users in a certain group in AD to be allowed on my Captive portal network. Anyone know how to do this?
-Mike
I'm a big fan of ubiquity. The stuff is amazing and amazingly affordable.
you would probably want a point to multi point type setup.
http://ubnt.com/downloads/datasheets/rocketm/rm_ds_web.pdf
You can get this for as low as 90 bucks + cost of antenna (http://www.microcom.us/am5g16.html)...
It's not included because that is not how it was designed.
What you are looking for is to run a watchdog of some sort that will automatically fire the magic packet when a certain condition is met.
You are going to need a very in depth knowledge of how DD-WRT works and able to program...
bandwidth caps will stifle innovation.
Bandwidth is not a finite resource like electricity or gas. It doesn't make any sense to bill it that way.
There should be no caps, you pay for how fast you download. I have 512Kbps 1Mbps 5Mbps 15Mbps 25Mbps 50Mbps and 100Mbps, increasing in price...
It would be handy to be able to have UDLD auto-recover. I dont' think my switches support that, and it would have been time savers in the past!
UDLD = UniDirectional Link Detection
scott,
Spidey would have scene the ports on the far end of the 6500 err-disabled with a cause of UDLD violation
DD-WRT supports PPTP server/client and on the OpenVPN version it supports OpenVPN server/client.
It also supports DDNS, which will help with overcoming the dynamic IP's.
That will get you your layer 2 tunnel using networking hardware rather than your PC's running hamachi or something...
that may work but while the tunnel is up having the same IP as the outside router address maybe cause issues if you also try to connect to the web interface via that address. The point may be moot as you should be able to connect to the inside interface when the tunnel is up. I would still...
This works for version Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) std (SVN revision 13064) and your router is also the default gateway to the internet
For the server IP, Pick an internal address that is not within your DHCP scope and is not used by anything else.
For client AP's make it a range...
No he didn't "miss" that. You should not inherently EXPECT those increases based solely on changing from docsis 2 to docsis 3. If you get an increase, like you did, then great. But those expectations are what Jack is saying are naive.
As an example; it's the same lines of thinking that...
Change the SSID and password.
Tell your neighbor to get his own internet.
You may also want to check AT&T's ToU. I found a copy at http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/att/terms/all/
specifically section 10. A.
As a networking professional the term cloud to me "usually" means hardware or service whose details are unimportant for this particular diagram, application or solution.
If you do this keep in mind that you do this, as if you set it too low some games/applications will error out.
For example, on my cheapo router I lowered the TCP timeout and then Bad Company 2 started timing out after 5 minutes of multiplayer gameplay - TCP timeout was set to below 5...
What you want to do is give the VOIP traffic highest priority. Is the VOIP traffic going to a seperate device on your IP network?
If so you could give priority based on IP address. You willh ave to use DCHP reservations or static IP's for this method to work effectively. Say for example...
Thanks!
The data cables are actually touching the supply power lines. The cables come to within inches of the transformer itself. Luckily it isn't turned on yet.
Or a transformer next to data cables? The number of Cables is in the 200-250 range and the transformer is pretty big. About 4'x3'x2'. What are the best practices when it comes to clearance from transformers for data?
I ask because somone has decided to install a transformer right next to my...
Essentially What you are trying to do is make one big subnet so that all of your devices are in the same subnet. That could be accomplished by re IPing all your devices so that they are all in 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.2.0/24
What you attempted to do is change the mask which would essentially...
Thanks Jack, However I already tried that but it didn't work.
The solution was drivers it turns out. I'm going to be yelling at the PC tech's in a moment. Don't know how they patch every month but have drivers 3 years out of date.
Hi,
Does anyone else have wireless issues in Windows 7, especially when coming out of standby? Did you do anything to help improve this?
I am in a corporate XP network where some users are doing unofficial windows 7 testing. Windows 7 wireless seems to have trouble connecting to wireless...
sometimes solutions like a SAN will come in a shipping crate that is basically a rack. If you know anyone that has done major upgrades they might have one kicking around that might be suitable.
You would aslo be spending over 7K for just the networking hardware. You will probably not find 10Gig stuff on ebay for a long time yet.
In short if you can't afford 10gigE your equipment probably isn't capable of pushing it anyways.
I can't find that command or any like it.
Is there anything in here that looks like what I'm trying to do?
UVX0(config)#aaa authorization ?
auth-proxy For Authentication Proxy Services
cache For AAA cache configuration
commands For exec (shell)...
Hi,
I'm an Alcatel guy and our organization is moving to an all Cisco world. I was able to configure My alcatel switches that were hierarchal to automatically go into enabled mode when I logged into them.
Is it possible with Cisco?
