Try Windows repair (the second repair option) it's much easier than a complete format. Can't say what's causing the problems; I only run with SP1 and all the updates for it. I never trusted SP2.

Thanks for everyones help. Turned out to be my popup stopper hanging and not allowing the screen saver to hide the task bar. Went to another brand of popup stopper and all is well. Thanks again for your ideas and help.

Sounds like a driver conflict to me. Try reinstalling each of your hardware drivers from the system/hardware page by hitting the update driver button for each device. I believe it could be a sound or USB driver that loads last that might be your problem but maybe someone else could chime in and...

Why don't you do a clean install of Windows XP and take the ME off. The upgrade disk will do this, it will just ask for the ME disk during setup to verify that you own a copy of ME.
