Which Windows software to do secure wipe of hard drive?

Heidi eraser can do whole partitions. Just make one fat32 partition covering the entire drive and wipe that. Not quite as thorough as dban (won't get mbr, partition table, etc) but it'll do the job for the overwhelming majority of cases.

http://www.etherboot.org/wiki/pxechaining This is pretty close to what I followed. I didn't use a script served up by DHCP though, just a single gpxe image with a script embedded. edit: ok reading this further, its not all that close. i used a dhcp server that next-server pointing to a...

    CPU for homebuilt SAN

OK, thanks. I'll see how it looks with everything on one line. It wouldn't be a problem to set up a 2nd network in parallel just for disk access, but it is only 3 machines, none of which deal with much data.

    CPU for homebuilt SAN

Ancillary question to this: Does anyone know of a router that will let me run jumbo frames on my LAN and re-encapsulate them at layer 3/4 so anything going out to the internet has a 1500MTU?

    CPU for homebuilt SAN

It'll be one machine per disk in the SAN (going to just migrate the existing machines' drives over to the san). I'm hoping to avoid layer 3/4 overhead by using ATAoE, but we'll see. Really? My internet is only 12 megabits and the network is all-gigabit. Is it just a bandwidth issue or is...

    CPU for homebuilt SAN

I'd done it with out-of-the-box tgtd (no hardware assist) and got 90 megs/second over gigE. No special hardware needed. That was with a c2d e6600 though - that's why I'm asking about CPU.

Probably pxe->gpxe chain with dhcp and tftp running on the san. If I can find a ataoe driver that works with win7 x64 I'll go that route, otherwise iscsi. Think any of the new atoms would do it? Or via nano? edit: i'd love to go fanless with this too.. but its not critical. and disk io...

Relative I/O speed of each category of Disk subsystem

Way too many other factors to give any meaningful answer to any of this. For example, an enterprise-grade SAN can give amazing performance, but if you're connected to it through gigabit ethernet you'll never see more than 125 megs/second. Also, device speeds vary. My netbook's SSD gives me...

    GA-EX58-UD3R Rackmountable?

Is any of this mission-critical? If so you want ECC memory. That means xeon or opteron and ECC dimms. Forget the i7. Is 8 gigs really enough memory for the VM's you're hosting? Also, if you're going with an LGA1366 CPU (xeon 3500 series in this case), you'll want to get DIMMs in multiples...

Getting an old Laserjet 4M to work with Win Vista

9/10 times its the adapter, especially if the parallel end is a centronics connector, not an actual 25 pin parallel port. I'd grab a parallel card for the computer. Barring that, get a USB to parallel adapter that gives you an actual parallel port on the end, not just something to plug into...

No real need. iastor runs single drives as AHCI even if the controller is set for RAID. Install the latest from intel and forget about it. If you're hellbent on doing this though, stick the boot drive on another controller (install drivers for it first), set the ich to ahci, boot from the...

    Securing a hardware VPN

For the amount of data you're likely to see going through a VPN, nothing is really going to be slower than anything else unless the hardware is extremely slow. 3DES is probably the most computationally intensive though, depending on hardware. I'd go with AES-128. Some new issues with the...

To AHCI or not to AHCI?

AHCI - yes. Shouldn't be any problems getting at your data. The only problems caused by AHCI are just XP not having a driver for it. There's ways to add it after the fact, or use F6 during install to slip it in. But if you're starting from scratch there's hardly any reason to not use AHCI if...

    noob confused about i5/i7

Not sure. Seems like a single gpu would be the best case for testing this. In fact I'm pretty sure the interconnect between X58 and NF200 is just PCIe x16, so there really isn't any added bandwidth here.

    noob confused about i5/i7

I'm curious about how PCIe latency affects framerates too. Anyone here have a board with a single PCIe x16 on the northbridge, and another on the southbridge, and is willing to do benchmarks comparing a (modern) GPU in one vs the other? That would shed some light on this. Obviously the...

keep in mind the 5520 does single-core turbo to 2.4GHz. so if you're really talking about one thread at a time, the question is of 2.4GHz bloomfield vs. 2.83GHz yorkfield. Would have to know all the specs of both systems to say anything more concrete, but I'd still get the newer technology.

    Recommendations for server cpu

You want ECC memory support. I don't think the regular i7's have that. Most dual-socket boards will work just fine with a single CPU in them. I'd go that route if its in your budget.
