Which Windows software to do secure wipe of hard drive?

Heidi eraser can do whole partitions. Just make one fat32 partition covering the entire drive and wipe that. Not quite as thorough as dban (won't get mbr, partition table, etc) but it'll do the job for the overwhelming majority of cases.

Does this affect all users simultaneously? If so, call the ISP. If not, it could be that your dhcp server is handing out one good and one (or more) bad dns servers.

OK, thanks. I'll see how it looks with everything on one line. It wouldn't be a problem to set up a 2nd network in parallel just for disk access, but it is only 3 machines, none of which deal with much data.

I'd done it with out-of-the-box tgtd (no hardware assist) and got 90 megs/second over gigE. No special hardware needed. That was with a c2d e6600 though - that's why I'm asking about CPU.

I'm throwing together a cheapo SAN machine to throw in my closet any network boot my desktops to cut down on the noise in my geek lair. What's the minimum CPU I'd need to reliably saturate gigabit with iscsi? How about duplex gigabit?

AHCI - yes. Shouldn't be any problems getting at your data. The only problems caused by AHCI are just XP not having a driver for it. There's ways to add it after the fact, or use F6 during install to slip it in. But if you're starting from scratch there's hardly any reason to not use AHCI if...

Help me disable a computer.

Short the reset switch headers so the motherboard sees it as constantly depressed. Hooking it up to the HDD LED isn't a bad idea if it works. Also pull a couple driver files out of windows (like hid.sys to leave keyboard and mouse not working)

Not sure. Seems like a single gpu would be the best case for testing this. In fact I'm pretty sure the interconnect between X58 and NF200 is just PCIe x16, so there really isn't any added bandwidth here.

keep in mind the 5520 does single-core turbo to 2.4GHz. so if you're really talking about one thread at a time, the question is of 2.4GHz bloomfield vs. 2.83GHz yorkfield. Would have to know all the specs of both systems to say anything more concrete, but I'd still get the newer technology.

Recommendations for server cpu

You want ECC memory support. I don't think the regular i7's have that. Most dual-socket boards will work just fine with a single CPU in them. I'd go that route if its in your budget.
