What is DDR-II, when will motherboards support it, and is it worth waiting for?

from what I've heard from the guys at Beyond3D forums, DDR II is simply DDR SDRAM but designed to run at higher clock rates. it has one disadvantage (at least when it comes to video cards) and that is that it has an extended (from 2bit in DDR to 4 bit in DDR2) burst or something like that...

ya, that's the whole point. the flip chip packaging is one of the major reasons why a near doubling in transistor count while sticking with .15 micron doesn't kill the clockspeed.. as for the P4 @ .18 vs Athlon @ .18 thats a terrible comparison.. first of all, the P4 topped out at I would say...

What do you guys do with your old Computer/Hardware?

every upgrade I get is carefully planned, so that most (if not all) parts that get replaced go into a second (and now 3rd) computer. every time I upgrade my fast computer something trickles down to the other computers and so they almost always get an upgrade at the same time. of course...

Next .13 Athlon rev to support 166FSB?

it certainly would be a good move on AMD's part to do this, their current chip CAN (and obviously does) benefit from it. if they are having problems scaling their CPU in MHZ, this is a simple way to get around that while maintaining at least SOME competition with Intel. btw, I'm assuming...

so you sort of saw the flip chip package coming? the R300 is something like 110 million transistors, which is nothing like the GF4's 60 something million (I think it was 64 mill).. so assuming a similar clockspeed is foolish IMHO.

what do you mean, 'ok with the brokerage thing'?? it's just like adding tax to anything we buy AFAIK, ie, here in Manitoba we have 14% total tax, so at $158*1.14 to give me $180.. at least that's my take on it. oh I could be wrong though.

raytracing is when you take a light source and use reflections of that light off of objects to get soft shadows (which is what every shadow in real life pretty much is). it simulates real life light just like Aureal's A3D 2.0 simulated reflections off of walls to get proper environment effects...

Well I know the hercules GTXP has the same chip as the Santa Cruz, so I could try that and hope for the best. As for the Acoustic Edge I think it actually has a chip made by Philips onboard.

I guess I'd have to give you the version of my kernel in order for me to get automatic support right? it's 2.4.8 which is what came with Mandrake 8.1. I'm trying to make sure that I don't get a soundcard that doesn't work in Linux like my Vortex 2 (ok, it works in tuxracer for some reason)...

CD-RW + DVD rom combos...any thoughts?

I have an LG 8x-12x8x32 combo DVD/CDRW drive. it works perfectly fine, has buffer underrun protection, etc, so I'm happy. I bought it for $140 Canadian (so around $90 US or so), which isn't a bad deal considering a high speed burner (which I don't want to bother with) costs about $100 or so.

ISO good sound card / reviews that don't suck

well it sounds to me like the best bet would have to be getting a reciever with Dolby Pro Logic II and connecting it to the soundcard with the digital output. that way, even IF the source audio is stereo you can get 5.1 channels out of it. that's good for music, however I hesitate to recommend...

New Radeon drivers out...

I'm sticking to the latest official ATi drivers.. when going from one of the betas (this was before Catalyst) to Catalyst drivers I noticed a 277 point increase in 3DMark. I think I'm satisfied with that.. oh FYI I'm only running a Radeon LE @ 166mhz w HyperZ etc on a Duron @866. no tweaker...

more likely the R300 will be called the Radeon 9500 and they'll have two professional level cards based on it, the FireGL 9700 and the FireGL9800.. at least that's how it is with the R200 series. as for RV250, I haven't a clue what they'll call it, but it should be 8xxx since it's a DX8 chip...

who likes macs?

I like Macs cause they look so damn cool (at least, I like the tower cases, I could care less about the iMacs), they even (at least USED TO) have the motherboard on the fold on side panel, which is extra cool for upgrading. sure they don't run games all that fast, I don't care, I barely run any...

imgod2uThe Athlon is not memory-starved, not at 1.67ish GHz anyway. Memory bandwidth requirements are directly releated to how many instructions are fetched per second and how many instructions the CPU works on at any given time. For the Athlon, that's 10 integer instructions at any given time...

the Athlon IS as bandwidth hungry as the P4. that explains why you see increases in performance as the fsb and RAM increase in speed. now, I'm not saying that PC2700/DDR333 are capable of catching PC800 RDRAM, becuase even IF it has latency problems, it still manages to get a higher overall...

surround sound w/ santa cruz?

surround sound mode enables Dolby Pro Logic. what Dolby Pro Logic does is look at the stereo stream, and extract 4 channels from it, center, left front, right front, and rear. your rear speakers are actually just one channel (compared to Dolby Digital).
