Killer Network Interface Card

Anyone w experience using SATA or eSATA for backup.

I tested my 300GB (60gb free space) Maxtor Diamondmax 10 SATA hd in a Vantec Nexstar3 eSATA/USB2 case first with the eSATA connection (to an internal SATA->eSATA bracket connected to my mobo) and then with the USB2 connector. Here are the HDTACH quickbench results, eSATA on top and USB2 beneath...

My little experiment with eSATA external enclosure using internal SATA connector

Interesting way to go about setting it up. My eSATA/USB cases came just came with an internal SATA to eSATA bracket. That's what I use when I hook it up to my pc. I have a pair of these Vantec Nexstar 3 cases I have an eSATA pc card for hooking it up to my laptop.

Why not SCSI?

If you don't mind getting a used card you can pick up some pretty cheap cards off of ebay. I've seen LSI MegaRAID SCSI 320-2E dual channel U320 PCIe Raid cards for between $100-$200(depending on the seller). Some as rebadged Dell Perc 4e/DC cards. I think the retail price for these cards is like...

For Notebook, what would you choose.Ati Mobility x700 or Nvidia 6600 go?

Well I'm not sure how high the 6600go can overclock, but so far I've ran the 128mb radeon x700 on my Asus Z70va easily at 400/350 (core/mem) from the stock of 350/300. I think I got about a 2930 score in 3dmark 05 with it oc'ed at 400/350. That's with the P-M 1.6@2.13ghz cpu, I'm using from this...

P-M 1.6@2.13ghz I thought pin modding would be tough, but it's pretty damn easy. Besides taking off the cpu heatsink and fan, the hardest part was putting the little wire into the socket! haha. I just picked up this Pentium M 725 (1.6ghz) cpu, did the pin mod and it's running great at 2.13ghz...

How come Dell does not show their HDD speed when configuring your laptop?

No, it's not really any noticeably louder than other hard drives. When I compared the sound of my 7k60 to the 80gb 5400rpm in my friends hp laptop, I thought his sounded louder actually. :-O Hitachi did release a newer version of their 7200rpm laptop hd's the 7K100 series, so I'm not quite sure...

question on laptop ram

I'm pretty sure it won't work. Well if his laptop requires ddr2 memory then he needs to get it. (e.g. a laptop with the sonoma chipset)

Asus Z63A

small notebook power adapters?

I guess it just depends on what laptop you get. I have an Asus Z63a (w3a) and the ac adapter is pretty small on that(smaller than the one on my old Dell 600m). I'd say it's comparable in size to the one that came with my friends 14" ibook. Although, the ibook one is more square shaped compared...

What laptop comes with built-in microphone?

Pretty much all laptops have built in microphones. My new Asus laptop has one, all the Dell's I used before had them, even my oooold compaq armada laptop had one. It's usually just a small little hole near the lcd screen, where the mic is.

How do you install XP on a laptop with no cdrom and no floppy?

If you were able to boot up with the hd on the laptop and you copied over the I386 folder, all you need to do to set up WinXP is run "WINNT.EXE", which is in the I386 folder. That will start the setup program going.

Spirited Away DVD $14.99 at Best Buy

Dell 2005FPW - Deal DEAD

well I couldn't resist the temptation any longer. I ordered the 2005fpw along with a 512mb cruzer mini usb drive(needed one of these too!). Total came out to about $460 after all the coupons. The $30ish tax plus $8 enviromental fee to california really hurts, but still a great price for me...

Why are plextor drives so damn expensive?

I'm not sure how their quality is lately, but I have two Plextor 12x10x32 scsi cdrw(one external, one internal) drives still going fine. I'd probably buy a dvdrw drive from them if my laptop didn't have an 8x dvdrw(NEC drive) drive in it.

Dell 700m Hard Drive Swap

haha, i did the same thing on the 600m i just got from Dell. Switched out the 30gb 4200rpm drive that came with it and put in the hitachi 60gb 7200rpm drive in. No really noticeable increase in noise/temp and a noticeable difference in performance gains. :-)
