  1. Question Buy a new video card or build a new system?

I'm wondering whether I should buy a new video card or just build a new system. And/Or upgrade my memory. Or...or or or. This will be used for gaming, but nothing bleeding edge, no ultra settings. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, for instance. Buying ASAP in USA, no brand preference, just best bang...

  3. Question Any equivalent to the old "Attention Mid-Range System Builders" thread?

I loved that thread. Built two systems off of the weekly suggestions. It was great for people who don't roam the labyrinth of CPUs, GPUs and which motherboard fits what. Is there any equivalent that provides a complete "best bang for the buck" parts list, here or anywhere? Talking about this...
  4. Best gpu bang for the buck on my 4690K

    Thank you sir.
  5. Best gpu bang for the buck on my 4690K

I think I will stick with what I've got. I've found a used R9 380 from Powercolor for $170, is that a good deal?
  6. Best gpu bang for the buck on my 4690K

Sorry for the vagueness. Looking at Kingdom Come: Deliverance, system requirements Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660, AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870. I've got an older BENQ 241vw monitor. $200-$300? At some point, I might as well build from scratch I guess. I'm happy to spend less than that, btw. Thanks.
  7. Best gpu bang for the buck on my 4690K

I'm currently running a I5 4690K with an Asus R9 280 (AMD), and was trying to figure out where to upgrade. What's the best bang for the buck gpu for this cpu? Or would it behoove me to build a new system entirely? I'm a noob, so the more specifics you can provide, the better. Thanks.
  8. How are YOU "Computer OCD"? If you dare, tell us your computer habits.

I constantly monitor the task manager and shut stuff down. Even though I'm on a beefy computer, I just can't help it.

  14. Left 4 Dead system; what you think?

/shrug What Windows OS can handle 32GB? Windows 7 64-bit?
  15. Left 4 Dead system; what you think?

EDIT: My mistake. He actually means to buy 32GB of RAM (so 4 of the 8GB sticks, above) and says he needs to run 4 monitors and do some 3D rendering. Sorry to change the parameters so dramatically. Thanks for the input; here's his current setup according to siw.exe: Motherboard...
  16. Left 4 Dead system; what you think?

My friend is upgrading - mostly plays L4D 1&2 and has some extra money. He asked my opinion on his selections, I'm asking yours. EDIT: My mistake. He actually means to buy 32GB of RAM (so 4 of the 8GB sticks, above) and says he needs to run 4 monitors and do some 3D rendering. Sorry to...
  17. Attention System Builders - 2011

Thanks so much for reviving this helpful service. Just in time for my next computer!
  18. Attention System Builders 2.0

The information from this here thread was invaluable for my first build in October 2008, and I hope there's some way to keep it updated. Is there another online resource that does what this thread used to do? I can't decipher the meaningless names that manufacturers give their mobos/cpus/vid...
  19. Workstations: Build or Buy?

No no, I totally get that now. Now I'm comparing Dell with other companies; smaller companies that have good resellerratings.com and pricewatch.com reputations and seem to be cheaper than Dell. Trying to get the best processor I can.
  20. Workstations: Build or Buy?

10-12 computers. Does it make a difference with the big companies? I have to maximize power and longevity. What's Dell's advantage? The warranty?
  21. Workstations: Build or Buy?

Assuming the Phenom II X3 720 is still in fashion (alot could change since March's update), what do you all think of these: http://www.computerlx.com/conf...spx?t=&product_ID=1257 http://www.ascendtech.us/custo...asp?kc=DTWINPHIIX37201 Too much cpu for a workstation? Not enough memory?
  22. Workstations: Build or Buy?

I'm looking at ascendtech.us to buy complete systems....anyone have any experience with them? Also, do most motherboards have both DVI and VGA these days onboard, or is that rare? It's not in the budget to replace every monitor.
  23. Workstations: Build or Buy?

Excellent. Any processor I should shoot for, since I'm not overclocking? Best bang for the buck.
  24. Workstations: Build or Buy?

Me, as usual. I would LOVE to find a good deal on pre-built systems ala Acer/Dell/Gateway/whatever with Windows 7 installed. If it's a substantial price difference, however....
  25. Workstations: Build or Buy?

    1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing. Web, Email, GoToMeeting, video playback....no 3d to speak of. I'll need an operating system as well. 2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread. Let's...
  26. Help-A-Noob with his first build

I ended up with Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I have run into some compatibility issues (mostly firewalls, other older proggies I've come to rely upon) but otherwise it's slick. How does Vista 64 handle memory compared to plain ol' Vista, or XP? What's the big differences?
  27. Help-A-Noob with his first build

Noob no more! Frankenputer Slideshow Thanks for all the help, gang. Oh, and I hate snap locks. I thought I was going to break the mobo in half trying to snap that cooler into place. It works like a dream. Now, where do I start with the overclocking and BIOS tweaking?
  28. Help-A-Noob with his first build

Is your avatar laughing at me as I run to check this stuff out every time one of you tells me about a new deal? Regarding NewEgg shipping; does it simply stack if you order multiple items, or do they combine shipping somehow?
  29. Help-A-Noob with his first build

Allrighty, I've taken your advice to heart. I don't need that big Benq monitor; the 22" will be a treat anyway. I present: FRANKENPUTER CPU: Core 2 Duo E7200 ($117.99) Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EP43-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard ($86.99) RAM: mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB)...
  30. Help-A-Noob with his first build

Just like a damned noob, I tell you one budget then go and blow it. New ideas highlighted below the old ideas. CPU: Core 2 Duo E7200 ($117.99) Core 2 Duo E8400 ($169.99) Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EP43-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard ($86.99) GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DS3L LGA 775...
  31. Help-A-Noob with his first build

Uh oh! If I decide to splurge for that Benq monitor on sale over in the Hot Deals forum ( FP241VW for $449) that goes 1920x1200(WUXGA), should I upgrade my video card? I know it wouldn't be necessary, but would it be worth the extra money for the 4870, or is the monitor a waste for this...
  32. Help-A-Noob with his first build

Does Vista x64 have any compatibility issues with games or software? Also, is there any of these threads that keeps track of the current hot hardware sales/rebates? I appreciate all the replies.
  33. Help-A-Noob with his first build

I'm not afraid of opening a system up, changing cards around and installing drives, but I've never built one from scratch and I've never overclocked. I plan on doing both here. 1. My PC will be used primarily for gaming; Warhammer Online and such. 2. $1000-$1200 budget, core items only...
