How do you measure frame rates in games?

I've never seen the host_speeds command before. I think most people bring down the console and type: net_graph 1 or net_graph 2 or net_graph 3 You can also put net_graph in the shortcut to HL.EXE. You can find out a lot of info here.

I can live with <100FPS in HL; I just wish you could get >1280x960 using OGL.

I think HL is limited to 100FPS max, no matter what you set it at or how powerful your hardware.

I must say, I am VERY impressed with Windows XP

NFS4: Have you tried syncing your IPAQ with XP over ethernet yet? Mine works the first time with Win2k, but when I change networks and toggle the IPAQ's IP, SM, DNS, etc. it doesn't work anymore. I have to reinstall activesync to get it to work again. I've tried WINS, but that doesn't help.

Calling all CS Server gurus

What kind of internet connection is it on? I'd definitely put a better CPU in it. Maybe an ATA100 7200RPM hard drive would help a bit. Your RAM is fine. I'd make sure that your clients/server is using the most recent game version, etc. Some maps are designed for a certain number of players...

Anyone? I ran the Disk Commander trial version last night, and I saw more files than I did with any other recovery program. What's even more amazing is that after pretty much giving up hope that I'd get anything back I repartitioned, reformatted, reinstalled Windows, and partially restocked...

why does every copy of 12.60 have "1.2.4.0" in the inf?

I got my "12.60" from there, too -- as well as from a few other places. I remember visiting a site that had v5 -> v12 drivers on it, but I lost the link. It's too bad some lamer(s) DoS'd 3dchipset.

My GF3 properties list it the same as yours, but I was curious why Windows display properties listed it differently. I think I downloaded one copy of 12.60 that Windows labelled as "12.60," but I lost it and I believe it came from 3Dchipset.com (closed). Maybe someone just changed...

Yes, the workaround worked, and I already use NTFS. Thanks for the tips though. I'm really tempted break my VIA mainboard into bits and put it and my hard drive in the microwave after this. :|

Yes, I was planning to install VIA, AMD, etc. drivers. Other than Win2k, nothing (I mean nothing) was installed other than video driver. Like I said, HDtach and Sandra were previously installed... I couldn't really benchmark performance without checking my system before and after applying...

lower FPS after GF3 install

I'll try it, but I thought the patch fixed having only 60Hz as a refresh choice; I can already use above 60; 85Hz, etc. Since my average HLDS FPS is now in the 90's, I assume that a patch I had installed previously (VIA 4in1, AMD miniport, etc.) was actually responsible for the drop in FPS.

This weekend I reinstalled Win2k Pro, applied Nvidia 12.60's, and ran HDtach v2.61 and Sandra v2001 (both previously installed) before installing anything else on my system (including Via 4in1, AMD miniport, SP2, etc.). I did an end task on Sandra while it was benchmarking one of my partitions...

No scratches that I can see. I tried a few different Win2k AS CD's, and all looked OK. I figure that there's something peculiar in the AS setup via boot CD that isn't in the Pro setup that really hates something in my system. For some reason, the same setup launched from the HDD works fine...

Thanks. Do you mean this? I can use 60Hz+ refresh rates without problems. I reinstalled Win2k again and only applied Nvidia 12.60's (no VIA 4in1's, AMD miniport, service pack, etc.) before running HL dedicated server, and the reported FPS shot up to 80-99. I'll install one thing at a time...
