One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is what sort of FPS you are expecting and what image quality settings you use. The reason I mentioned this is because living with a slightly lower FPS would mean a lower GPU horsepower requirement, therefore lower fan speeds on a GPU. For example, WoW...
Seems we're both suffering from the same lack-of-reading syndrome. The about page clearly states that it's a contest that takes place at a security conference. If you do some additional reading, you can find additional info on registration. They obviously will be vetting people that want to...
Chrome, Firefox and Flash can all be installed on Linux. So I don't see how that's not against Linux as well as Windows. Just because the itinerary doesn't actually explicitly say "exploit xyz against Linux kernel 1.2.3.4.5.6" doesn't mean that there's nothing against Linux.
The point is...

Him trying to make money isn't a problem to me. Especially since he's right about all the problems. As I previously said, the problems he mentions aren't technical in nature.
Actually now that I think about it... the community is so blinded by the technical wonderfulness of linux...
Check out Bryan Lunduke on youtube. He's got a couple of videos of talks "why linux sucks". It's not necessarily why people prefer windows but there's lots of little things in there about what keeps people from switching.
By momentum, I mean windows is what people have been most exposed to as far as computers go. As far as they are concerned, windows does the job they want it to do.
Take cars, for instance... it used to be that the better gas mileage was a reason that some people drove using a manual...
The other very short answer to your question is momentum. My point in the previous post is that it takes an effort to change. For some, it's not worth the effort.
At what point do you say "good enough" though? Are you using WEP for wifi security? Stock firmware on your $20 11g router? Is your router a dual xeon workstation running some super version of pfsense? My point is, you can always make your setup more secure, but is it worth the time and...
I'd say the current iterations of windows on current hardware is sufficient in all 3 areas even if Linux is better in all 3. There is such a thing as "Good Enough". Also the bloat issue had a lot more to do with OEMs putting a dozen programs that all load on startup.
.... until said user has...
The simplest reason why I keep using windows is because I don't have a compelling reason to switch. Win7 is just fine for me and the Linux learning curve is still sufficiently steep that I would have to have a very compelling reason to fully switch.
The issue, as I understand it, is that China promised that there would be universal suffrage in Hong Kong when the Brits handed HK back to China. Since HK had been under British rule for so long, everyone is very much used to living in a western style democracy. What sparked this whole mess is...
High VRM temps generally have 2 causes imo. First, the heatsink that cools the VRM is a single unit that also cools the memory chips. Second, the air that blows over the VRM heatsink is already much warmer from going through the GPU so it won't remove as much heat from the VRM heatsink...
I have one of these coolers on my video card. The fans died to I strapped some 92mm fans to it. It's heavy enough that I rigged a support using zip ties and a cable hole. Unfortunately I don't see a better way of holding the weight unless I end up with a case where the mobo is horizontal instead.
IANAL, I have no idea about the legalities of the owner's actions or the arrest.
I'm willing to give the police the benefit of the doubt that the office thought he was in sufficient danger to fire his weapon.
What I don't understand is, why were 4 shots needed? In the video you can...
Would help if you post a diagram with fan placements and how they are connected (ie, to the fan controller, directly to psu, etc).
One thing to remember is that any case openings will let noise out. So if you open the top you are letting noise out as well.
Any fans that are not controlled...
As was said already, make sure you budget for software and peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers).
As for building guides and such, newegg on youtube has a nice set of videos on that.
Fair warning with regards to putting an intake fan on the bottom panel. Make sure you find one that DOES NOT vibrate when horizontal and blowing upwards. I tried the Fractal fans that the case came with and caused a lot of noise from the vibrations rattling the bottom panel. The vibrations...
With regards to sound absorbing material, consider that open air vents do not block sound.
You should also consider the cost of the material vs just buying a new case designed for silence.
If you are willing to consider a case swap, I would suggest Fractal Design R4 as it has been on sale for...
