Hey guys, I just wanted to apologize for being MIA for the past few weeks in this thread, but I think it's best that I just formally bow out now. My goal of identifying Jasper and getting myself one has been accomplished and the info for everyone else to do the same is out there. Thanks to all...
A couple of notes on my Jasper now that I've used it for a bit:
1. I think it's actually louder than my Falcon. The fans have a hum/vibration to them that is far more noticeable.
2. I'm a little surprised at how little power we saved with the 65nm die shrink. I figured it would be more like...
Wow that's dedication! There's no way I'm going out in this weather (I'm in Boston, MA too)! I got the last Arcade at South Bay Target a few weeks ago and it happened to be a Jasper. Glad you were successful!
PS - Target employees are never that helpful to me. Maybe it's just that South Bay...
Hmm intriguing.... obviously MS wouldn't have required the increased memory if they didn't have to, and the old boxes had 16MB already. Maybe it's not a full featured NXE?
I haven't heard of XGX-00014, but if it has internal memory, it's almost certainly a Jasper. It may just be a slightly different SKU for Sweden/Europe, likely related to power differences. If the console says 12.1A, it should be Jasper as well.
Interesting stuff Darrell. I'm not sure what to think about the X-clamp stuff. I would think that Microsoft would have figured out by now if it was somehow detrimental, but who knows.
I think it's wise that you reminded everyone that these are not indestructible.
That date is not a strict cutoff! There are Jaspers before then (I have one in fact) and Falcons after then. That just happened to be the date the first one found was made.
I think it's hard to make the conclusion that it's "ZERO %" based on one data point. At some point, they will become Jasper Pros from all the online outlets.
I just realized why it's harder to see the current rating on Pros & Elites: the hard drive is pre-installed, leaving less wiggle room in the box. I don't know why this didn't occur to me earlier.
I agree, there's a small chance this is a Jasper. I believe 0841 is the oldest Jasper found so far, but there's a tiny chance 0840 could be one as well.
Only if you're receiver has an HDMI input. I'm still otherwise very happy with my non-HDMI receiver and see no need to replace it until I'm ready to go 7.1 surround and need HDMI to send 7.1 discreet Dolby Digital Plus/TrueHD/DTS-HD signals.
I actually have no particular opinion about this. It's all anecdotal information out there IMO. That doesn't mean it's right or wrong, it's just that it hasn't been tested thoroughly enough for me to conclude much. Admittedly, I haven't looked into it that much though.
Perhaps it's easier for them to keep one production line making 16MB Jaspers for Pros and (eventually) Elites, while the other does 256MB Jasper Arcades. That said, there have been some CSON Arcade Jaspers for sure, but maybe they're the only ones who have made any 16MB Jasper mobos so far. Pure...
Thanks Darrell. My Falcon Pro had the same label essentially, including the 52T-00141 SKU. I have a theory now that you've documented Pros to only have 16MB of memory and shown me the label:
The new SKUs and different labels will only show up on Arcades because they are the only ones that...
Hehe - thanks for waiting :) I did enjoy announcing it actually ;)
Heat output as strictly defined is not easy to measure actually. We could probably do exhaust temp and/or heatsink temp, but I have a feeling Anand is all Jaspered out for the time being. We already know the electrical power...
I'm shocked nobody linked this yet:
Everything you ever wanted to know about Jasper:

Includes identification, lots of pics, and some theories on RRoD etiology.
14.2A PSU is by no means an indication that it is Falcon. Even 14.2A on the console is not a guarantee that it's Falcon. There are many reports of Jaspers labeled 14.2A. The same thing happened with early Falcons being labeled 16.5A (like Xenon/Zephyr). This is all well documented in my articles...
Yep, could have been. There are quite a few Jaspers out there labeled 14.2A. I personally didn't want to risk it and/or deal with the hassle of returning, so I put those down too.
Yep - confirmation via the power connector is the best way if the label reads 14.2A. With Arcades, the label on the box with "Value Bundle 2008 E" may be an indicator as well. Only you can decide if it's worth the risk with regards to a possible return. If you can, just be patient and wait a...
Could still be a Jasper. A lot of them are mislabeled as 14.2A. Basically, 14.2A does not guarantee Falcon or Jasper (nor does it rule out Jasper), but 12.1A does guarantee Jasper.
Darrell - when you post pics of your Pro, can you please include the sticker from the box? I'm curious if the Pros have any distinguishing features other than a 12.1A label.
To everyone ordering online - I think it'll be a while before you see guaranteed Jaspers online (with the possible...
With regards to the "Value Bundle 2008 E" sticker and the "XGX-00019" label, it certainly seems pretty reliable so far. I haven't seen a Falcon yet that had that, but nobody seems to be talking much about the Falcons they've found. Also, I'm not sure if it's any help for Pros or Elites. I've...
Because AnandTech has been on the forefront of the hunt for Jasper. Another blog thread that started it all went south so I moved everyone here.
We should welcome the "noobs" IMO :)
I can't imagine why there'd be any difference in the scaling abilities, but 720p is definitely better than 1080i IMO for your TV. You're throwing away a lot of information by going interlaced, and the vast majority of the content is only 720p (at best). I'm assuming this isn't related to NXE...
Can you take a picture of your sticker? My 0835 FDOU Pro Falcon also had "Value Bundle 2008 EN/E." We currently theorize that "E" by itself at the end might by an indicator of Jasper.
Those that have found Jaspers, can you let us know if you have the "Value Bundle 2008 E" sticker on yours? At least for Arcades. I'm curious about Pros (and eventually Elites) as well. If anyone has found one with such a sticker that ended up being a Falcon, that would be useful as well.
Very interesting. It's interesting that it shows up as a different SKU in their system. That kind of surprises me, but it is what it is. Maybe we have a fellow hunter amongst the Newegg ranks? If it's not really a separate SKU, the chances of them sorting these prior to shipping would be quite...
Great news! Congrats Darrell! You've contributed immensely to the hunt and I'm glad your turn finally came as well :)
It would be interesting to have pics of the Pro internally just to know whether it has 16mb or 256mb of flash onboard. Mostly just a curiosity really. Also thank you for the...
Well boys and girls, my turn has finally come. I stopped by the local Target just to check one last time while they still had the $20 gift card with Arcade purchase. Two Arcades left in the case (and apparently the whole store) and low and behold: 0842X FDOU, 12.1A, "Value Bundle 2008 E"...
