opening up the PSU

hey guys my computer is making this really great annoying buzzing-ish sound, i've tracked it down to the PSU fan. i want to open it up and mayb oil it up or replace the fan.. any precautions i should take before opening the PSU up? i've never done it and i dont really intend on getting shocked...

alrite, the barton 2500+ sounds good and cheap too :) but i'm usually an intel guy so i dont really follow amd stuff.. anyone care to recommend a good stable amd motherboard for overclocking? i'll probably be fitting it out with as much memory as i can humanly cram on it :P a bit off topic...

oops nevermind guys... someone found the box! the quick way of ID'ing something :P thanks for reading anyways! also found out that you can ID it by booting up and the BIOS will tell you at the beginning (for anyone who might be interested...)

thx 4 the replies so far.. i tried closing down all the processes (cept for vital system ones), i turned off automatic reporting, i disabled indexing, and tried removing the zip drive too... i also tried turning off all those effects in winxp (so it looks like old windows, none of that flashy...

XP video problem

i just did a clean install of XP about a week ago, and so far its really great, except for this one problem. the problem is that no matter where, the screen seems to freeze for half a second, about every second. its not noticable at first, but after a while it really gets on my nerves...

What cpu will you use in your next upgrade or new system?

northwood for me... mainly cuz of the heat... i'm trying to minimize heat as much as i can for my next "quiet" system, while maintaining some performance; right now performance isnt as important as keeping it quiet... and amd is jes too hot for me.

check out http://www.r3mix.net for some info on ripping mp3s from cds.... personally, i use EAC for ripping and encode it using LAME. LAMEenc is constantly updated, so you can get the latest version here if you're looking for it. edit: fixed links :P

Which DVD drive

yeah, do a search and you'll find a lot on this topic. i have the toshiba one, its pretty good, people say that it's quieter than the pioneer slot-load one, but i haven't heard the pioneer in action so i cant really say anything about that. as for the DAE, i get about 7-8x when i'm ripping my cds.

Need help from someone w/ soundblaster live using win98

if what newbiepcuser said doesnt work, try moving the sound card into another pci slot. i had the same problem where whenever i boot up it would say that the SB16 Emulation was having a IRQ conflict, so i moved the card to another slot and it changed the IRQ and fixed it.

ewwwwwwwww..... thanks for the replies, i'll have him see if there are multiple error messages, but from what i heard so far, it just goes straight to that error message. i had him test all the other components on his other computer, his ram chips, his video card, etc, and they all work...

thanks for the replies..... i'll go with the V3-2000.... i found a Geforce2MX that was PCI version, but if my CPU cant even handle a V3-3000, then it definitely cant handle a Geforce2MX. :)

yeah, i was considering a Voodoo3, sounds the best out of all the available pci cards, wish nvidia would make some pci cards though... the machine has a K6-2 300mhz, not too good for software rendering... i tried it out and got framerates around 11-12, at 640x480 res, so thats why i want to...
