Those of you on call for IT jobs, how goes it?

Systems Engineer in a 6-week rotation (currently on-call right now). Required to carry a pager (a legit pager from the '90s) with a 30 minute response time. VERY small stipend for carrying the pager during the week. Unfortunately most pages come from application monitoring, and as the POC...

http://askubuntu.com/questions/27213/what-is-the-equivalent-to-the-windows-program-files-folder-where-do-things-g Nope, think of it as your "Users" profile on Windows (C: \users\<your name here>). This is where your data goes (pictures, videos, etc).

UPS that shuts down ESXi when no power is detected

I wouldn't recommend going cheap on the UPS, especially if this server is running VMs, but you can't go wrong with one of these APC units: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16842101393 It is pricey, but this UPS should give your server enough time to properly shut down all of the...

Can you convert Kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10?

Do you get a similar 404 error when you try to run: do-release-upgrade -d As far as I know of, this usually works, if apt-get dist-upgrade fails to find the latest OS version.

    PrimeGrid LLR Races Thread 2015

With big thanks to Ken's juggling strategy, I was able to finish another 6 ESP WUs, but I had to abort four WU, as they would not finish on time. Here's hoping I can still hang on in the top 250 participants.

    PrimeGrid LLR Races Thread 2015

I completed an Extended Sierpinski Problem via my Haswell laptop (Core i7 4700MQ @ 2.4GHz) in 24,181.69 seconds (403.028 minutes). I'm not sure what other people are seeing with their processors, but looks like the Haswell CPUs are extremely fast for this competition, even with HT turned on.

New DC rig is on its way.

As far as I know of, the Northbridge on most motherboards these days can take quite a bit of abuse. You *should* be fine with passive cooling (whatever your case has for cooling intake on the front), assuming you aren't going crazy high on the overclock. I believe the Cases & Cooling folks...

What are your 2015 DC goals?

I was thinking the same thing, since I haven't seen an Outsmart Ebola Together WU in quite some time. I'm not sure if this is a very small subproject, but it seems there hasn't been much work, given all of the big news for the last six months.

What are your 2015 DC goals?

With New Year's Eve fast approaching, I thought about what are our DC goals for 2015? This year I'm surprised I was able to hit 2 million in WCG, considering I only started a few years ago, while PrimeGrid I'm also surprised I've hit 3 million with only CPU work. For 2015: WCG: 4...

    Upgrading Core i7 860 Build

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm thinking of procuring a new GPU and a bigger SSD for the time being, then I will revisit upgrading my LGA1156 build to LGA1150.

    Upgrading Core i7 860 Build

I've been playing around with Adobe Premiere and encoding (not rendering, thank you Ken for the clarification) a bunch of 4-12 minute videos for a small YouTube channel as a hobby. After looking around on the Z97 platform, I see I could get more bang for the buck with the 4790K. I figured...

    Upgrading Core i7 860 Build

Hello all, After many years of reliable use, I've been contemplating upgrading my former multi-purpose rig (gaming, virtualization, rendering, distributed computing, etc) to newer hardware to support more video rendering. The former rig's current hardware: Core i7 860 (not-overclocked)...

    Virtualization Issue on Ubuntu 14.04

Depending on what you are using for the storage solution on your Hyper-V cluster, I would take a look at the error logs (both at the Hyper-V and SAN level). I'm not familiar with Hyper-V, but in other virtualization solutions (read: VMware), you can view log files and see where any disconnects...

    Fx 9590

With something that's running near 5.0GHz, you should probably look at any of the CLCs offered (Corsair H series for example). At the very least you'll stay near the 53-59c, that you're use to.

Distributed Computing as a heat source?

Funny you should mention this topic. I remember the days in college (while I was on a different team for Rosetta@Home), we used our gaming desktops for heat in the winter. Got more bang for the buck with our tuition dollars during those winters. Ah, the memories. But more seriously I'm...

    High-end workstation laptop

Your best bet is going to be one of three options: Dell, HP or Lenovo. At least two of three my employer utilizes heavily are Lenovo W530's and Dell Mobile Precision M3800's. Both are rock solid and paired with some SSDs + a FirePro/Quadro card, he'll do very well...

Eye pain: Difference between TV screen and monitor?

I would look at a couple of things: 1. What is the brightness level between the monitor and the TV? 2. What is the refresh rate between the monitor and the TV? (I highly doubt immediate eye strain would be caused by the this, but it's worth asking) 3. How far are you sitting from either...

Who works for the biggest idiots? Top this..

Try having a Project Manager not actually manage projects. During one of our last major software releases, he "insisted" everyone else should manage the project, not him. I'd swear he was the laziest manager I've worked with.
