Have you been horrendously unlucky with one specific brand?

For me, it's always been OCZ memory (when they were around) and XFX graphics cards. XFX at least bends over backwards to correct the problems -- both big and small -- but I always seem to have bad luck with them. I don't really mind buying from them as a result since they take care of me, but I...

Is your Amazon Fire TV stick...garbage?

Mine also gets stuck while playing Netflix (video stops but audio keeps playing; fast forwards to catch up). Never saw it on any other video streaming app. Problem seemed to get better as the weather cooled so I suspected overheating. I also have the stick <2' away from the router so that...

    Cell phone radiation

Maybe try NFC sticker? I don't know about windows phone (despite owning a Lumia 830) but my boss can set all sorts of settings by programming an NFC sticker to do on his galaxy. For example, every time he enters his car he swipes his phone over a sticker and the phone settings switch to "car...

Should I buy a separate PC for work if overclocking??

Over clocking can affect the precision of calculations though. This is what stability programs like Intel Burn Test are designed to test. I'd never have an active over clock on a PC I use for work. I'd get another PC, OP.

    Wand3r3r's WHEA overclock util - *Update 9/13* #Beta0.2

Here's the event trigger I made: Here's the action info: Start a program -> Program Script: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe Arguments: /K "echo WHEA-Logged." Cool utility by the way. Surprised no one else has built one before :)

    Wand3r3r's WHEA overclock util - *Update 9/13* #Beta0.2

You can do this in Windows 7/8 (probably others too but I haven't checked) with a scheduled task. One of the options with coming up with a scheduled task is to fire it off of an event. Just set it to fire off of WHEA. I don't have the script I used with me at the moment, but it's dead simple.

Should we stop our cores from Parking?

As someone who also has core parking disabled, this is not at all what happens -- at least not on my 2600K. I also did not see a significant increase in power consumption or heat with it disabled.

WHEA errors - how many is too many?

Just as an FYI: You can set a scheduled task in windows to fire off everytime a WHEA error is logged in the event viewer. It will be easier to keep track of the errors that way. Maybe have it write a log file of your own creation to the desktop. I have this on my upgraded netbook as I want to...

Why no mini-DTX boards? (or: GPU + sound card in a mini-ITX system?)

You're welcome :). I've been toying around with doing it myself but I'm pretty happy with my SG02 + mATX setup.

Why no mini-DTX boards? (or: GPU + sound card in a mini-ITX system?)

A lot of Mini-ITX boards come with a mini PCI-E slot somewhere on the motherboard (for a wireless card, or something). Some people have had good success plugging their sound card into a mini PCI-E to PCI-E adapter. If you really wanna go small, you could try that.

Life is short - miss my mom

Lost my mom 3 years ago a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving. Brain cancer. Very aggressive. She was 50 when she died. After we had put her in hospice care I knew full well she didn't have long and yet, the day she passed, I wept so hard I felt like my eyes were gonna fall out. Sorry, I don't...

The Hours Teachers Work, and other thoughts on American elementary education

I had a feeling your wife's lesson plans were fairly static but I didn't want to make any assumptions. My girlfriend teaches science and has been teaching for about 4 years now. Every year, she's had to teach new curriculum. She's certified for general science, biology, chemistry, and...

The Hours Teachers Work, and other thoughts on American elementary education

My girlfriend is a teacher, a good one, and works on lesson plans, grading, etc for a couple of hours after she gets home. Every day. Not saying there aren't teachers that don't have to do work after they come home, and I'm not saying there aren't teachers that have it worse than my girlfriend...

Does anyone else use StraightTalk? I ported both of my iPhones over!

Never heard of StraightTalk. Prices look great thanks for sharing. I'm on a prepaid t-mobile monthly 4G plan for $30/month and the StraightTalk plan for $30/month is almost identical, so I don't think I'll switch. Than said, ponying up for a year pre-paid gives me an effective per month cost...

Ever drove through something slick on the road

Was driving my girlfriend's '99 Elantra to the store in moderately snowy conditions on a 25 MPH street in the city. Snow had already stuck to the road pretty well with no salting or plowing done. I had been driving well under the speed limit, and had to make a turn downhill. I was picking up...

VOIP / Google Voice - Who do you use?

I've used BroadVoice, which is decent if you don't know what you're doing. My girlfriend have been...

    Why HTPC?

I turned the parts from my old rig into a formidable HTPC. It wasn't anything super high-end, so I didn't think I'd get much money for them. Fundamentally, my reasoning was this: why not use it as an HTPC? I couldn't come up with anything worth while.

    Are long POST/boot times necessary?

My Asus board has a nice feature where I can set the time for the POST display (I think that's the name). If 'Full Screen Logo' is disabled, I can control how long the motherboard displays POST info. I think the default is 3 or 5 secs. I just changed it to 1 (still plenty of time to get to...

Stress test tool that allows testing of only designated cores?

You might be able to get away with using something like Intel Burn Test, setting the number of threads to 1, and then setting the core affinity to the cores you want to test using task manager. You can do this by right clicking the process in the task manager and clicking on "Set Affinity..."...

WinFix: i7 owners Win7 by default is crippling our CPU's

SSD Failed - What would you do?

Yes, it is an ADATA SSD. I'm not aware of any law you refer to, but in the warranty it only says "(3) In the event of a warranty request for a product that has been discontinued or is no longer serviced, ADATA will, at its discretion, offer a comparable substitute product instead of...

SSD Failed - What would you do?

I wrote this thread in techreport forums, but wondering what a different mind set might say. My SSD failed about a week or two ago. It was an Indilinx based drive, so when I sent it back in for warranty repair I was told that the drive was discontinued and they no longer had any. Instead...

    AnandTech Ivy Bridge Performance Preview

With tax season upon us, I've been planning on picking up a 2600K when I get my refund. I'm not sure if it even matters anymore, but what stepping do I want when picking* one out? Also, how do I identify it? *I work near a microcenter, so I should be able to pick and choose.

And yet, from the initial looks of it, I set it too high! ;) I have a C2D E6600 right now OC'ed to 3.0GHz. Clock for clock, Phenom II is either slightly ahead or slightly behind Penryn so it's not a real clear win for Phenom II over the similar Conroe. I'm not really willing to give up the...

Found another one: Ukraine store accidentally ships FX-8120 and it gets tested!

I'm getting anxious waiting for the official reviews (not that I haven't been already). On the one hand, these results are atrocious. They're worse than Deneb clock-for-clock, core-for-core. On the other hand, there a number of respected enthusiasts in the know who remain excited about the...

Fudzilla: Bulldozer performance figures are in

They look pretty legit. The only thing that bothers me/looks fishy is that if you look at the Cinebench screen shot in the background the benchmark hasn't even been run. Further, they're not even using an AMD system if you look at the system info. It's a Xeon running Max OS X. Also, and correct...

First bulldozer benches from AMD - surprising results (beats 980x)

I actually had a feeling these might be more fakes. Think about it: nobody except a foreign tech site (that I've never heard of) and VR-Zone are the only ones talking about it. Yet we have Anand post about Trinity and no mention of Bulldozer -- both of which were apparently in the same showroom.

Why do reviews say that Llano's Turbo Core isn't working?

I've had a Gateway LT3103u (netbook, post-Acer takeover) for about 2 years now and it's been great. I would consider myself a poor owner of the thing, heh.
