    They should have made the 5870 with a 384 bit bus, that may have made it much more potent. That would have given about 225GB/S of bandwidth, and should have provided the performance it needs. (Doesn't mean I'm not going to buy one, I'm just wondering what may have been...)

    The low fps is a little odd, I have a GTX 275 that gets that range at 1680*1050 with AA at 8X, it could be an architechtural difference, but it does seem a little low.     whats the idle temps? A core 2 quad shouldn't get to 80 degrees under load. you're not overclocking right? When you put it on, do the diagonal ones first, then the other two. Don't put too much pressure on them, if they won't go in, then maybe one of the pins are split.

    Phenom 2 outrageous temps

    its not that bad, my phenom 2 gets about 65C at load, and thats with a xigmatek cooler and 2 92mm fans. At idle, it's about 44C. Whats your ambient temperature, and also, check using overdrive, or other software and if its still high, reapply the cooler/thermal paste.

    A MSI Radeon HD 3870, not that it was a horrible card, but I got it for AUD$200 3 days after the 4850 became available in Australia. Also, since this was the overclocked version, it mysteriously die and then come back to life 3 seconds later with the message the GPU recovered from a serious error.

    the basic packaged drivers have always worked pretty well, but the drivers off AMD's website are sometimes quite buggy. 9.3 refused to install for me entirely. if you get catalyst working, there should be a fan control option in overdrive. Use that, or you can use Rivatuner

    A good match for the rest of the system and no one has brought up yet is the 4850X2. it requires about as much power as a GTX 280 at load, doesn't need 2 pci-e and is really fast. it would be significantly faster than a 4890 or GTX 275. Get the 2GB version if you could.

    I don't think the GT300 figures are accurate. if they indeed have 512 cores, then the die size will be huge. Going from 55 to 40nm is only a change of 30 percent, with the figures they provided, the GT 300 should have a die size of about 1.5 times that of the GT200, and that is quite scary...

    There's no major architecture change from the X4 940, why has the maximum ceiling changed by 0.7 (apparently) when there are no changes and the two chips are identicle except for the DDR3 controler and the base GHz ratings
