Anyone Else Bored With Mobile Devices?

Not just you. I've been bored with both PCs and mobile tech. Both platforms have matured and are "good enough" for many people. In the case of mobile tech, the rectangular touch screen slab for phones and tablets are what people are used to and expect nowadays. Companies don't want to...

Is a DVD/CD drive needed anymore?

Because at the time, I had several Ubuntu CDs already burnt to CD, and I hadn't figured out how to make a bootable Ubuntu USB drive. I haven't experimented with Ubuntu installed onto a USB stick for 5 years, so I don't know how far they've come. If you can install Linux from an existing...

Is a DVD/CD drive needed anymore?

When I was building ITX PCs for myself, I came to the realization that I didn't need an internal CD/DVD drive in them. Instead, I used an external USB CD/DVD drive when I needed to boot into a Linux live CD to test something. This saved me the cost of buying a CD/DVD drive for each ITX PC, and...

Why are so many people buying the crapsung galaxy s6?

I guess smartphones aren't about function anymore. Instead, they're more about style and social status.

Has the law of diminishing returns taken place the last 10 years

I'm not so sure about 2005. Maybe around 2009, when Core 2s and Phenom II/Athlon IIs were the majority of the market. That's my threshold where CPUs had enough single threaded performance and number of cores to provide "good enough" performance for general, every day tasks. And any increase in...

How do people use larger and heavier tablets?

Take a mop, hold it near the mop end, and try to lift the handle by tilting the mop. No problem right? Now hold the same mop at the handle end, so the mop is dangling at the far end away from your hand, and tilt it upward. Much harder, right? I'm trying to hold and use the tablet like this...

How do people use larger and heavier tablets?

Recently, I bought my first large tablet, a 9.7" E-Ceros Revolution Android tablet, which weights 1.3 lbs (about 600 grams). Its roughly similar in size and weight to an iPad (not iPad Air). I tried using it for a few minutes. Right away, I found the size and weight cumbersome to use compared...

What color is this dress??? (the interwebs are asploding)......

I'm comparing the same picture on the same site using 3 different computer monitors side by side and 3 different tablet screens. To me, the white/blue part of the dress is sort of a pale light blue on all 6 screens. But they're different shades of pale blue. On one screen, the blue stand outs...

Can you have too much storage?

When you have to park your car outside of your garage in order to make room for hard drives, that might be a sign that you have too much storage.

    Non-removable battery

I guess in theory, lighter and thinner = easier to handle, less of a physical and mental burden for the user, making it more desirable to the user to own and use.

What do you do with your old/outdated/replaced hardware?

If the outdated component is an entire PC, I install Linux on it and experiment with stuff like compiling code or setting up FTP/web/etc servers. I also use older PCs to performance test the software and scripts that I write. If it runs quickly, efficiently, and responsively on yesterdecade's...

Why do software programs open TCP connections with themselves?

I'm not sure. I've never had to open a socket to my own app before. The only reasons I can think of are: - The app already had port 5454 opened for other reasons. A different part of the app needs this feature, so he simply opens a socket connection to itself to get at this feature. - That...

Why do software programs open TCP connections with themselves?

For the pairs question, I think netstat doesn't distinguish when a TCP connection is being connected to the same localhost. netstat sees an outgoing TCP connection, and an incoming TCP connection, and reports both, which is why you see connections to the same host in pairs. If the connection...

Have you sped up your upgrade cycle, slowed it down, or neither?

Slowed down to a standstill. Phenom X6 1100T. 16GB RAM. Samsung 830 SSD for the Linux OS. A couple of 1 TB HDDs for the data files. I'm so overloaded with computing power for my needs, I won't be upgrading my computer until it breaks.

I need something legitimate to do with my fast CPU and plenty of RAM

Compiling code and video conversion are the 2 main things I do that take full advanatge of my 1100T. I guess the only other thing you can try is running some virtual machines and use RAM for the virtual hard disks.

Is this still how to build a PC?

That's pretty much it. Depending on how far back you've been, some minor things have changed. For example, with SATA being the standard for HDD/SSD/CD/DVD drives, you don't have to mess with master/slave jumpers any more. Just plug in the data and power cables and you're done. Power supplies...

    CPU for a basic computer

Don't forget an SSD. For basic usage, nearly any CPU and GPU is good enough. But an SSD will add a level of snappiness that makes the PC feel really fast.

Is Athlon II X2 245e any good today?

Another vote here for replacing that 2.5 HDD with an SSD. Remove that "last bottleneck" and add some snappiness to the PC.

Is Athlon II X2 245e any good today?

Using passmark as a rough estimate, the 245e is somewhere on par with the upper end of the 65nm Core 2 Duo and the lower end of the 45nm Core 2 Duo. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/midlow_range_cpus.html

Network cable "explodes" - At total loss how it keeps happening

Yeah, and in fact, I'd try putting these unplugged cables on top of the powered cable. If it's mice or whatever, they'd have to chew through the unpowered cables first.

And this is why a large thin aluminum phone is a really terrible idea - *Bend-Gate*

Lewis tweeted an explanation for that: "overhead shot was overexposed was when screen reflected off lights, saw the clip, had to re-shoot - conclusion was the same." So this explains the difference in time in the video. Besides, several other videos show similar results...

    Are 256gb flash drives reliable?

Those super cheap USB drives are probably fake. They're much smaller flash drives hacked to report a larger capacity. I would stay far, far away from those.

Nintendo Reveals New 3DS and 3DS XL

Yeah, I think it's a bad idea to keep the same name. Just as there was consumer confusion between what is and isn't compatible between the Wii and Wii U, I see the same problem occurring with a 3DS, 3DSXL, New 3DS, and New 3DSXL. Customer: I bought Xenoblade Chronicles, but it doesn't work...

Will I notice a difference between Sata II and Sata III?

I doubt you'll notice a difference. Unless you routinely deal with large files that take more than several seconds to read or write, you won't notice the difference between SATA II and SATA III. As mentioned above, coming from a laptop HDD, the biggest difference will be the "quickness", or...

Does anyone know how reliable IGPs are in general?

Going from memory from our phone conversation, roughly 3 weeks ago, the Windows 7 PC suddenly changing resolutions and getting bigger and blurrier. Does anyone know how reliable IGPs are in general?

It's not my computer. It's my sister's work PC, and she's located very far away, so I can't easily check the temperature. Also, it's an HP Pavilion p6-2120, and she doesn't do much on the PC, except data entry using the web browser, and other basic office tasks. At the moment, I doubt it it's an...

Does anyone know how reliable IGPs are in general?

I'm helping someone troubleshoot a PC problem, and they suspect the video card is dying. But I discovered that the video card is actually an AMD HD 6530D IGP, which is a Llano IGP integrated with the CPU. I don't know how reliable IGPs are, but I haven't had an issue with any of my...

    DDR4 - awesome or meh?

It depends on your real world usage. If you're running a server, or running a bunch of virtual machines, or doing anything else that requires a lot of RAM, then DDR4 might excite you for its higher capacities. For the general user, DDR4 is likely to be more meh, because DDR3 RAM is fast enough...

So is SATA really done at 6?

Maybe they don't simply bump the SATA speed up is due to heat? Kind of like for desktop CPUs, we don't simply increase the GHz of the CPU to 8 GHz or 10 GHz due to heat.

What actual speed should I be getting connected to a Gigabit ethernet port?

That's right, although it would probably be easier to use the 2nd PC's name instead of IP. So, you enter something like this in your test app while on your first PC: \\NameOfPC2\shareddir And as for sharing a directory, it's been a while since I've used Windows, but I think you right click on...

What actual speed should I be getting connected to a Gigabit ethernet port?

250 MB/s up and 400 MB/s down? When you ran your LAN speed test, what IP address are you reading sending to/receiving from? Did you type in the IP address of your own computer?

It finally came ! Samsung 850 PRO

Except for the price, it's a very nice drive, plus a 10 year warranty! My only other complaint is that it seems like SSD development has stabilized and matured. Improvements at the high end are now incremental or hitting the SATA3 6 Gbps wall.

    Reboot after closing optical drive

I'm trying to eliminate the possibly that your SSD is doing something welrd either with the power draw or with sending some weird command or something to the controller. Perhaps you can disconnect the SSD and try the Linux live CD test again. Other than that, I'm running out of ideas. I'm...

    Reboot after closing optical drive

Responding to your edited comment: I've never tried ejecting the CD or DVD while Linux is running a live environment. I have no idea what would happen. Have you tried booting Linux from a USB stick, and then try inserting a disk to your optical drive?

But how's that possible when you said your motherboard reboots after you insert a disk? Also, how did you eject the DVD while you were in the Linux environment? Some other thoughts: Have you tried disconnecting your HDD/SSDs? As in, disconnecting both their data and power cables, so that you...
