    I've always wondered why people do such things. Is it because they intensely hate the animal in question, or they are simply overcompensating for something? Knowing that they can hold such power over another animal and most likely get away with it.

    Because a mouse trap is used to kill a wild animal that is sometimes regarded as a pest. That people can't seem to make the distinction with some child's pet and a pest is staggering. The hamster is domesticated and thus is protected under law... like a dog.
