Statement 1 should be faster, but i doubt you will see any noticeable difference. I'd be hesitant about having a table with many property fields for a single item. If your concern is speed this table will become a hotspot of your application. You might be better off having an intermediate...

Regular expressions have their place, but many a times the same result can be produced without using them. Benchmarking the RegEx vs the for loop, the for loop is approximately 5-6 times faster for 1000000 evaluations. So while RegEx is definitely faster to write, if performance is your concern...

You could actually check if the input is in the correct format in a few different ways. 1. Regular Expression 2. a try catch with Integer.parseInt 3. A loop over your input string checking each character The fastest approach would be the loop.

I stand corrected, my statement wouldn't return the correct result set. You should change your approach though, you can return the same records without using the UNION ALL. An EXISTS clause would be far more efficient.

Since your output doesn't include any fields from pv, you can exclude that from your statement. What Klin posted would work , you could also accomplish the same using the code below. The execution plan below is more efficient.

apt-get / yum, temp files?

The default install of yum on Fedora/Redhat keeps its cache at /var/cache/yum - you can check /etc/yum.conf for the location of your rpm cache, in case it differs. That would be the easy way of keeping copies of things you have installed. If you want something more elaborate a google search...

Does a scratch like this buff/polish out?

First off buy the touchup paint from your dealer, they should be able to perfectally match your cars color. If you get something aftermarket, I can almost gurantee it will not match. For a good writeup on how to do it, check out http://articles.autopia.org/ar...chips-scratches-1.html
