Wasn't sure where to post...but odd question.

Everything nerp says is right on the money. Additionally check for software that you didn't know you had installed ... viruses, malware, etc. We hope that you do not have any of that sort of thing. Use your anti-virus software and then also check with some additional boot-CD virus checkers...

Trying to recover data from a defective hard disk by replacing the PCB.

I could be wrong about this, but from what I've read it is frequently not as simple as just putting a new controller board on your old bad disk. But you never know, you might get lucky. There are things that have been specifically programmed into your controller board that make that HDD work...

Yes. A friend of mine has just told me that the exact symptoms that you mentioned are happening to him. KB3001652 is either hung or taking forever to install. Surprisingly, that update was issued in October of 2014. I don't know why it came down for him today

Some tools are "4 KB sector aware" and others are not. Usually the older ones are not. The "aware" ones will only create partitions that are properly aligned. Do some investigation and check out each of the tools you have mentioned. Go on their website and investigate in depth by downloading...

In that dual boot system use Win7 to create the partitions on the advanced format drives. It will get it right. XP will misalign the partitions. Since you have Win7 on the box do not use the WD pin 7+8 jumper method because you will end up with a partition that is permanently misaligned if Win7...
