Fractal Node 304, one of the nicest case I have seen in a long long time.

Now that mini ITX motherboards have so much to offer, and that case fits full length video cards, it really is a no brainer for me too. Just waiting for the Haswell release to be able to purchase some new parts and then they will be occupying a Node 304 as well.

Terrible Coil Whine HX850

I had a Tagan branded Topower PSU that used to scream like a stuck pig when loaded. Totally unacceptable for use in a quiet room. I RMA'd that because there are acceptable and unacceptable levels of coil whine. Sounds like you have the later, OP

Strange 7970 Problem

If you haven't already, CMOS battery out, reset mobo BIOS. Load optimised defaults and go from there. I found the Asrock Extreme 3 Gen3 BIOS to be a little tempremental.

It's likely that your stock speed processor is also contributing to your slightly lower than expected frame rates. BF3 is a very processor intensive game in multiplayer, this is never more true that in 64 player servers. You should try overclocking you CPU a bit and noting the differences. I bet...

i5 -2400S vs i5-760

Are you planning to overclock? The i5 760 can be overclocked by raising the bclk of the chip. This is not possible with the i5 2400s. However the i5 760 uses an older socket type (1156), which in the UK (can't comment on US) is barely available anymore.

Are you using the same sata cables for your testing? You should try quality certified sata 3.0 (6G) cables to rule that out as a potential issue in your trouble shooting steps.

Yep. The fact that memory overclocks are yeilding such large returns in performance suggests that there is plenty of ROP performance and they are currently somewhat bandwidth bottlenecked in their performance.

7970 Questions

Guru 3D recommened a 550Watt PSU as the minimum for a single card. I think, given the quality of Corsair supplies, this would be sufficient for your system. Using the rig in my sig, I am getting frame rates of 50 - 70 fps in BF3 at 1920x1200 using the Ultra preset. Very very playable for me :)

I needed the voltage bump in my signature to get rid of those black bars you describe. Definitely a GPU artifact as far as I'm concerned. If I run stock voltages and then minimise my game window and bump the voltages, the bars are removed instantly. I have found that nothing stresses my card...

7970 Issue

I have some coil whine with my Sapphire. Happens particularly on screens with high frame rates. It is bad for the first 2-3 minutes when I get into a game. As the card warms up it reduces. It has already substantially reduced in intensity over the past week. I don't plan to do anything about it...

You do realize that at this stage all the cards that are being sold, bar 2 XFX models, ARE REFERENCE DESIGN from the same supplier? I have never heard a bad word about HIS anyway, they're just not a tier 1 AIB in the US.

The reference GTX570 has relatively cheap power delivery circuitry. Therefore, if you overclock and overvolt a reference design card, there is a risk you can burn out the card's power regulation circuitry. If you buy a non-ref card then some of them have updated circuitry to address this...

I would use a linux live cd, or equivalent, to load into an os. You will be able to see your old drive from there. Connect up some other storage and copy the file you need. Voila. I am running a side fan on my cooler master case and it did help keep my graphics cards fed with cool fresh air...

OC'ing a Q6600 on an Asus P5E

Pretty sure you will be heat limited using a Tuniq Tower on a 65nm quad core. The one I had did well on the Conroe dualies and struggled a little on my Yorkfield ( 45nm quad ). I don't think it would have made the grade with a Kentsfield. 3.4 GHz is still a great overclock for one of those...
