Not to say Sapphire is a bad company becasue one guy on here said he has an un-overclockable Asus 4870
but I bought the center fan model Sapphire 4870 and 3 days later it is dead, the card had some faulty cooling issues and burned itself to death at stock clock....

Well with my low tech knowledge, I scrummaged up a logical test in which I think I can prove that why my 4870 1gb burned out after 3 days can be attributed to my Antec 500w PSU....

Lol Im assuming the red style fan is better and toxic is best seeing as how all people with the red style fan seem to run their 4870s at 35% OCed and here I am up at 60%...
I just tried something interesting, I turned off the manual fan control and let the driver controlled fan map run....and it seems to be working quite well...The highest fan speed I noted was about 67% but at the same time it backed off when necessary, this to me seems more effective at managing...

Thanks, yea I began to figure the same.....I ran crysis and it crashed the game, after returning it to normal everything seemed to run ok. Hmmm kind of dissapointing, is it worth asking for a new 4870, because I do know alot of people who had no problems overclocking theirs.

:thumbsup:the 280 is still relatively a very powerful card, besides the onset of the 285 and 295 is only going to drive the price down. I would buy one 280 for now then later on pick up a second one. I think it would be a smart desicion to pick it up!
+1 I had a similar desicion between 2 Ati 4850s or a 4870....
Simply put yes you will have better performance today, but as always with buying older tech....its going to become obsolete alot faster, whereas if you go with the 260 you will for sure get more consistant frames, no worries about...

search anywhere and read any comparison and they will show that the 4870 1gb is more a rival with the gtx280, the 260 really isnt even in the picture...

I can tell you first hand seeing as how I just bought this card yesterday, we have similar setups, rather I have an E8500 @ 3.66 ghz. and also at 1920x1080 .So first, I Just replaced my 8800gt oc, which is similar but slightly under your card and the difference was huge.
Cod 4 fully maxed out...
I did that and it definately was a main part of the issue. I pulled it back and the games ran no artifacts, but I noticed after gaming that at some point the GPU crash warning was triggered, so there must still be too much OC...
