Victory! I popped out the CMOS battery and now it loads fine, just with an error that it's loading the CMOS values from the default (which they were anyway). My best guess is that the computer is 4-5 years old and the battery was almost dead for a long time, but since I never turn it off it...
Sounds good! I'll try those suggestions and report back if anything gives a different result. I'm really just baffled because the computer was sitting there turned off for a week, and worked fine when last I used it.
No offense, but that isn't helpful at all - I know how to trouble-shoot via replacing components until I find one that works.
I don't have extra pieces of hardware lying around and don't have a lot of money to play trial and error with, so I'm asking if other people have seen the same...
