Dell OptiPlex GX1 HD Problem... Help!

Dell computers are setup cable select from the factory.. make sure you set the new hdd to cable select and try it again.. also clear nvram and set system defaults - I believe for the gx1 you turn on all 3 keyboard lights(num,scroll,caps lock) and then press ALT-E then ALT-F.

Virus infection WHAT DO I DO, all data GONE

You should make sure that the partition is still intact - run fdisk and view the partition listing. if it says something like file system unknown you might as well debug and reload. if its that important to you there are several companys that will help you out.. ontrack... ect.. cant remember...

computer will not wake up!

Windows power management is flaky at best and will lock up the computer more often than not. What I find works the best if you must have the computer power down is to disable standby/hybernate and the hdd shutdown features and just leave the monitor to shut off, that way usually works ok.

Power button causes standby instead of Shutdown

Check you power management properties... right click on desktop -> click on properties -> click on screen saver tab -> click on settings button for monitor energy savings. click on the advanced tab -> make sure it says shutdown in the power buttons box. Also windows should be automatically...
