ok, i THINK i've managed to fix it. i looked into the mediainfo output from the original file, and found that the "Interleave, duration" of the audio is set differently than the rest of the video. unfortunately avidemux doesn't seem to have the option to change the indexing. so, i manually set...

I don't think any of that are relevant, since I'm dealing with game recordings recorded at exactly 30 fps. Recording and encoding at 29.97fps gave the exact same result.

my workflow is sony vegas for editing, then frameserving it to avsproxy, which goes to avidemux for encoding. i'm using x264 (mpeg-4 AVC) and AAC encoders. and before you ask, if i skip sony vegas, the issue remains.

Might want to brush up on your understanding of the English language. I'm not suggesting the cinema display at all. I'm saying that if you really want the screen, you MIGHT AS WELL get the cinema display, since you are at least not saddled to a Mac. Reading comprehension, look it up.

Best screen? Please. The iMac screen is hardly the best. The glossy finish ensures that no professional would ever use it. And even if you really want it, get the LED cinema display. It's the same screen, minus the crappy Mac parts.

The 7970 I owned didn't have coil whine; neither did my friend's. I did own a 670 with horrible coil whine though. Coil whine has nothing to do with which brand the card happens to be. You can get it from just about any electronic with a complex pcb.

As I've said, all 7970 will ship with a mini dp to dvi adapter. This adapter is active, so you'll have no problems with triple display. With that said, make sure the adapter is present.

Every 7970 comes with a DP to dvi adapter, so you don't need to purchase one. As for which card to get, I'd suggest looking at the games you play, and pick the card with the best performance in those games.

7970 GHz edition incoming!

This might end up like the 4890 vs 4870, in that the former featured a redesigned chip for much higher clock speed. And yes, the choice of memory clocks will make a big difference as well, since the 7970 runs into a memory bottleneck at 1200mhz core. Supposedly, anyway.

Rage ran fine on my old 5870. Didn't even have to update drivers. The game itself sucked balls though. Having owned plenty of cards from both companies, I'd have to say that they have the same driver stability.

Building for gaming 2500k or 3570k Ivy

The 3570k that I'm using had no problems hitting 4.5GHz. Temps top out at 70C with a voltage offset of +0.077V and a mugen-3 cooler. So out of the two, go with ivy bridge.

The fan controls for the CPU fan is a simple ramp up target speed and temperature, and just a target speed for case fans. It gets the job done as far as I'm concerned.

Probably because I never had any slow downs when installing updates on modern systems, even with hard drives. I probably just left the window in the background and kept doing whatever I was doing. Either way, I still don't think it is worth it.

An ssd isn't going to make that better, since windows updates are typically small and are CPU bound speed wise. Any modern CPU with a 7200 rpm drive would be fine.

Which is preferred: WD Caviar Black or Seagate Barracuda 7200.11?

the 7200.11 have bugs, as a previous poster mentioned. i think a much fairer comparison would be between the caviar black and the barracuda XT. the 7200.11 and 7200.12 (which aren't plagued by the firmware bugs) are more in line with the caviar blue.
