1000BaseSX: Switch choice and distance from switch to switch

My teacher also noted this and suggested me having a router before each workgroup switch (drawing not updated with this yet). As the server room will be located in the basement of building 1, crosstalk will go over the fiber in the ground, but will not come into the workgroups.

1000BaseSX: Switch choice and distance from switch to switch

I've decided going with 1000BaseSX as backbone for the MAN layout I'm working on. But I'm not sure if I directly can connect 2 1000BaseSX switches and obtain the threoretical range of 10 KM that Fiber should be capable of. What's the best I can expect from two directly connected switches...

Range: FDDI vs. Gigabit Ethernet Fiber for backbone

It's seems like a good idea to rent bandwith from the local phone company, but I'd like an explanation of the "MAN" technology if anyone doesn't mind. :) Is it just a backbone network employing Gigabit Ethernet?

Range: FDDI vs. Gigabit Ethernet Fiber for backbone

I'm currently working on a network training project, where we are to plan a network solution for a company. In short the company consists of 5-6 divisions spread out in a middle-sized city. It's important for the company to have secure internal communication with the divisions. Most of the data...

    Installing 2k issues

Are you by any chance overclocking your FSB? W2K is rather sensitive to that, and it could possibly NOT install even if other OS' like Linux and Win 98 works. I've had this problem with my P2B-F (which has a rather low FSB/PCI ratio) where I overclocked my bus to 133 Mhz...afair it resulted in...

Any idea why Task Scheduler in Win2K would stop working?

Have you by any chance changed your password? If Norton or any other scheduled task tries to run a scheduled command under your current useraccount with the wrong password, they would certainly not work. The 0x0 means that the task was completed successfully. Here is a little page for error...

Is it dangerous having my PC case open all the time?

Dust isn't dangerous for your hardware as long as you don't let it bog up your fans and heatsinks, and you seem to be very careful about it....cleaning at least once a week sounds a little fanatic to me ;) but the amount of dust varies greatly from place to place. Having your case open *could*...

Best OS for an all-purpose server? W2K Adv Svr or W2K Pro?

should i trade my rig for a Laptop

A desktop is for the price always better than a laptop, but it really comes down to what have the need for. I'll second RedShirt's opinion with buying an inexpensive laptop from the beginning. After a few years, you have the cash for something else :)

High 12V rail causing HD failure?

If you have a voltmeter or a multimeter, try to measure the 12 V rail with that. From my experience, onboard voltage sensors can be far off at times.
