I uninstalled 6.39 and ran driver cleaner pro. I rebooted and reinstalled 6.53 drivers without any problems. I am not sure how one would "hose" the MBR using a file removal utility. Driver Clean Pro is just a handy removal tool and does not perform any low level disk functions.

You can't reboot to DOS like you are thinking of in Win98 but you CAN boot to any other OS using bootmenu. As Ipno suggested you can install a second OS like DOS. The question remains... why DOS? At least if it were LINUX I could understand :)
Are you still having this problem? I encounter this when I installed the latest Promise driver (2.00.0 b39) from the Promise website. However, if I switch back to the default WinXP driver (1.60 b43) or use the latest Asus driver (2.00.0 b18) the problem goes away. Good luck!
