    Ignore these people. Call AT&T. You got the lights in the wrong order (receive, then send, then online), but you have no upstream signal if send flashes a few times, then goes back to recv. Nothing you do to the software is going to do anything about no upstream on the modem.

    The main problem you'd run into is voice recognition still concentrates on one voice at a time. Get two people talking, and you're out of luck. There's plenty of prior art, and I highly hope anyone who tries to patent such a thing fails horribly. What a pathetic thing to try to do.

    I'd imagine your average schmuck in support, sales, or customer service is going to be running Windows, probably NT or 2000. Your average engineer is going to run whatever it is he/she wants to run to get the job done. The specialized support departments are going to run whatever they support...
