What first world problem did you have today?

Had an old x99 motherboard and i7-6800k cpu to go with it. Pretty outdated and power hungry (140w TDP). Sold it for $100. Have people pinging me right and left wanting it. Should have asked for more.

What first world problem did you have today?

Selected my 25-year work anniversary gift. It shipped out 2 days later and is reportedly at my local distribution center for UPS, however it went from a delivery by 7:00pm on 5/27 to delivery date yet to be determined. I request customer support from the vendor but got an automatic reply that...

What first world problem did you have today?

Just got my year-end review. Earned an exceeds expectations after a year of hard work. Don't get to know what that means in $$$ until mid-January.

What first world problem did you have today?

I've been on a CPAP for about 10 years now. It took a few weeks to really get used to it, but I did. Now I cannot sleep without it. Hope the experience improves for you.

I use that service and occasionally have that issue as well. In particular, it shows packages that are to be delivered or will be delivered "soon". About half of the time when I have a package from my mail-order pharmacy that shows a delivery for that day, it doesn't come. It's been up to two...

Reverse first-world problems: What *good* thing happened to you today?

Got an "Exceeds expectations" for my annual review. That bumps my pay 5% and my annual bonus amount, which is 7% of my pay, is paid out at 120% of that amount. This is the third year in a row. My manager likes me but also recognizes that I've been working very hard. I'm grateful for that as I...

My alerts to this followed thread don't always work. I've had to read through several pages to get caught up and now I don't have any time to watch my YouTube subscriptions.

I gave myself a cardboard cut opening the box for the tree topper. I gave myself a paper cut opening the bandage for the previous wound.

Your next car (and what you're driving now)

Had an '08 Prius with 203k that I got rid of a month ago replaced by a '13 Volt. The Volt is perfect for us (wife and 2 kids). 95% of our driving that aren't family vacations can be done in electric-only mode. I thought it would be more of a lateral upgrade than it is. The Volt is so much nicer...

Brake fluid flush - when is it necessary?

Ha ha. Yes, it was a typo. I did mean to say compressible. Thanks

Brake fluid flush - when is it necessary?

As many have said, the issue is the water content in the fluid. It will boil when hot and that creates steam which is incompressible and leads to rapidly fading brakes. My biggest concern as mentioned by HarriLui is that the fluid becomes corrosive. It any vehicle with ABS, you have some...

What first world problem did you have today?

Is the tub fiberglass? My shower curtain's weights are ceramic magnets and generally stay affixed pretty well. If they weren't magnetic, or if my tub wasn't enameled steel, I don't think they would do much as they aren't heavy enough to really keep it in place. I would drive because I enjoy...

What first world problem did you have today?

This. I live at the base of a canyon where there is a 20K acre wildfire burning. At night when the air cools and the wind blows from the canyon, we get very dense smoke and even some ash. This is in addition to the smoke we were already getting from the fires in California and other western...

On a road trip, transmission overheated/burnt. Need to drive home

My 2011 Odyssey with the 5-speed automatic will automatically downshift to 4th when cruise control is enabled if the speed goes 5 MPH over the set speed. It will even drop down to 3rd (if it won't overrev the engine) for very steep grades. It is harder on the transmission as anything other than...

What first world problem did you have today?

I was stung on Saturday. I had a welt on my arm 2"x6" and so very itchy. Two Benadryl and topical Benadryl has barely touched it. Swelling is down to a 1" circle today, but it is still very red, swollen and itchy. I disturbed the globe maple that their hive is in. I think I'll go after it...

What first world problem did you have today?

One of the sinks in my bathroom cracked and leaks now. Good thing I have two. Bad thing is if I can't find an exact replacement, I'll be buying two, or maybe even two plus a countertop because OCD.

Sorry I missed that. It would be the intake manifold. You can find a lot of examples on Youtube, both failures, and repairs.

    Running rough

I'd bet on leaking manifold gaskets. The 3.4 is notorious for them, and the problem is especially bad when the engine is cold. It can cause coolant loss, high idle, and misfire.

Is the Toyota Prius even worth it?

I have a 2008 Prius and while I echo the sentiments of most here that it is very reliable and has one of the lowest costs of ownership, I have a few gripes. I live in Utah with a lot of snow and big mountains. Those are two things the Prius does poorly with. It has very aggressive traction...

QNAP and Synology are utilizing the hardware acceleration. They wouldn't be able to support transcoding if they weren't using the QSV hardware block.

    Looking for a Storage Solution....

Passmark is only important if you are doing full software decoding. The Celeron 3160 has hardware acceleration for these functions. It cannot do more than 2 4K streams, but it can do those, and at much lower power usage than with software encoding.

    Looking for a Storage Solution....

I built a FreeNAS server several years ago. The requirements of the OS are pretty hefty as far as memory is concerned. It is also a tricky one from a support perspective. The forums for it are filled with users that expect you to know how to resolve your own problems or will sneer if you stray...

My work laptop that's docked and on AC power goes to sleep at random intervals. Sometimes less than 3 minutes, sometimes it doesn't happen at all. Windows powercfg doesn't show the events. Every time it happens I have to authenticate with the VPN again.

My work changed our PTO policy to allow us to carry over 60 hours instead of 40 due to changes in paid sick time legislation. As a full-time exempt employee, I am only allowed to take time off in 8-hour blocks. So either I leave 8 days unused and lose 4 hours, or I carry over 7 and end up with...

Has Windows' S.M.A.R.T. features ever saved you from a failing drive?

    Used police dodge Charger

A concern I would have would be the way the wiring harnesses are often hacked. They install a lot of equipment when they are put into service. Rarely is it carefully removed. They also have different wiring harnesses (primarily added circuits) compared with civilian vehicles which makes...

Anyone drive one of those Smart cars before?

I agree. It seems a frequent thing that people posting how cars are "dangerously" slow when they cannot accelerate from 0-60 in less than 7 seconds. Do we forget in the 70's and 80's many cars were close to 20 seconds? Yes, the freeway speeds were slower then but the biggest thing I see is...

Can't clone large laptop drive to smaller SSD

On my old ThinkPad T60, if the drive had the image written by a different machine, it would fail to boot. The solution for me was to use TI with the app and the image on USB, and the target drive installed in the machine. Something about its BIOS and partition offsets. I'm about to do exactly...

    Problems in RAM Slot 1

Do you have anything in PCI-E slots? There is some old hardware, particularly SAS controllers, that have trouble with the SMA bus and it causes the memory in slot one to disappear, or the system to behave in very unusual ways.

HP Elite 8300 and M1015 SAS adapter compatibility

I found out the issue. It turns out these older cards have an issue with the smbus. They will often disable a memory channel when running on UEFI systems. The fix isn't pretty, but it does work. That is to block the smbus on to the card by disabling pins 5 and 6 of the PCI-E connector. Mark...

Thanks for the suggestion Xavier. I did turn off option ROMS for storage and PXE. I did see that it worked as my old card SuperMicro card's BIOS was no longer activated at POST. I was only able to toggle the option for graphics between Legacy only and UEFO only. Neither option changed the...

I'm looking to move my FreeNAS storage to a VM on an HP Elite 8300 (yes I know, OEM and what not, but budget...). At any rate, I have an M1015 SAS card flashed with v19 firmward. Engine won't rev past 4500rpm even in neutral?

I had a Chrysler minivan I was helping a neighbor with. It had a bad idle and a small oil leak. The plugs were overdue, so I replaced them but there was no change in idle quality. I took it for a drive and it behaved similar to yours - it didn't want to rev to even 3K. I thought it was a plugged...
