What first world problem did you have today?

Had an old x99 motherboard and i7-6800k cpu to go with it. Pretty outdated and power hungry (140w TDP). Sold it for $100. Have people pinging me right and left wanting it. Should have asked for more.

I'd bet on leaking manifold gaskets. The 3.4 is notorious for them, and the problem is especially bad when the engine is cold. It can cause coolant loss, high idle, and misfire.

QNAP and Synology are utilizing the hardware acceleration. They wouldn't be able to support transcoding if they weren't using the QSV hardware block.

Passmark is only important if you are doing full software decoding. The Celeron 3160 has hardware acceleration for these functions. It cannot do more than 2 4K streams, but it can do those, and at much lower power usage than with software encoding.

My work laptop that's docked and on AC power goes to sleep at random intervals. Sometimes less than 3 minutes, sometimes it doesn't happen at all. Windows powercfg doesn't show the events. Every time it happens I have to authenticate with the VPN again.

Has Windows' S.M.A.R.T. features ever saved you from a failing drive?

I've never had Windows report a SMART error, but I have replaced 4 drives in my NAS in the past 10 years. Fortunately, I have never lost a drive to an unexpected failure.

Can't clone large laptop drive to smaller SSD

Do you have anything in PCI-E slots? There is some old hardware, particularly SAS controllers, that have trouble with the SMA bus and it causes the memory in slot one to disappear, or the system to behave in very unusual ways.

I found out the issue. It turns out these older cards have an issue with the smbus. They will often disable a memory channel when running on UEFI systems. The fix isn't pretty, but it does work. That is to block the smbus on to the card by disabling pins 5 and 6 of the PCI-E connector. Mark...
