Sony receiver "protect" mode?

It's probably detecting DC on the output of one of the channels. If it was being overdriven before this happened, it could be a shorted output transistor. Otherwise, hard to say without opening it up.

Old Asus A7V-266 w/ WinXP SP3 - still need 4-in-1?

I think you should be fine - XP seems to include some version (4.36 from one source), I wouldn't worry about it unless there're stability problems. Certain older drivers are recommended for older systems, I've been using 4.43 with a KT266A/win2k system and it's had 0 problems for years.

LCD repair? Anybody know?

Caps are a real possibility, which I neglected to mention previously (wasn't a problem for my monitor though). Some can fail without any external signs, but these are very rare indeed - what brand caps are used in the supply? To get at the tubes, you likely have to disassemble the metal shell...

I got the same message - just chalked it up to adobe being extra shitty (have a pdf open). Now I'm running malwarebytes to clean it up - Avira didn't pick anything up after the message, although I didn't get anything else after that. Regedit itsn't showing me having the same infected keys, might...

Sounds like a problem with the backlight tubes or inverter. I have a viewsonic lcd monitor that would do the same thing when I bought it - the tubes worked, but the protections in the inverter would shut-off the backlight shortly after powering on. I plugged the tubes into a gateway monitor...
