What changes would you make to video game benchmarking

I think you mean $4k/360=$11 i.e. core2duo is a ~6x more costly way to run their algorithm (less if you include code porting costs, more if you include power consumption costs)

Dell 2408: Just received it today... looks quite... odd. (re: wide gamut)

I think I know what you're referring to, sofakng. I also have a 2408, and I have found that if I let windows update (win7 or Vista) grab the specific driver for it, it changes the colour profiles, and I have no idea how to reset them (that part of windows is a mess). The tint is especially...

Video card suggestions

It depends on what games you play and what the rest of your system is like, but in all likelihood at that resolution you would find few games that really struggle with a GTX260, so yes, the GTX275 is slight overkill. You may also want to consider the HD4870, but both are pretty good value...

In my experience, marketing people are terrible at giving useful answers on technical topics. Clearly David Hoff is no better. The whole article is a rambling mess of suppositions from non-information, though I think consumers should share his concern about the emergence of multiple sdks.

Pattern recognization algorithms

I suspect that rotation will be the biggest matching problem, whichever method you use. My first inclination would be to reduce the complexity by pre-processing the random image section. Edge detection would probably be a start.
