Something everyone missed about the GTX460....

nVidia starts with A0 I think, so this should be the 2nd spin, no? I may be wrong of course, I easily mix up those. I really don't mind them however, I have two EVGA coming in my way and I'll most likely use the step up option if a better, fully enabled, chip gets released.

    Final Fantasy XIV online!

They are new gathering and crafting jobs, you can check the official site for information. I expect the more interesting new job to show up with either PS3 release or 1 year anniversary or first expansion. Since the jobs work with weapons, you have to list missing weapons and try to guess the...

    Final Fantasy XIV online!

Check the recommended specifications, I posted them in the previous page. The recommended GPU is a GTX460 768MB, so I'd say the GTX260 won't be stellar, but should work.

As a side note, check the awesomely high recommended system specifications for the game: http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/recom/na/pc.html. It was not announced yet, but they put it online with a link to it somewhere I guess. Thanks Google spiders.

    Monitor recommendations (games!)

Not to high-jack this thread, but is there no such thing as a 120Hz, LED backlight, 2ms, thin bezel, quite big, if possible x1200 and allowing portrait mode monitor? The monitor is what's giving me the most trouble with my build, I keep switching between Alienware OptX, a LED backlit Samsung and...

    Choosing an UPS

Yeah, it's not really for the money, it's more for the noise, heat and green, but I might reconsider if there's a killer deal when it's time to pull the trigger.

    Choosing an UPS

I guess so, but I want to get the best efficiency possible as well, so I need to aim at an average load at 50% of the PSU spec. The AX850 would be pretty perfect for that if I don't XFire/SLI and only mildly OC. Yet, if I go with the AX1200 and don't SLI/XFire then I won't get a so good...

    Choosing an UPS

Hi all, I don't know if this belong to general hardware but since it's linked to power, I thought it would be more fit here. I'm slowly choosing parts for a new rig and I want to buy and UPS to prevent potential data loss (I heard that some SSDs really dislike sudden power shortage). I'm...

    GTX460 "review"

I know, I hoped to buy 58xx right after SI release and hopefully after Intel SSD refresh but, alas, SquareEnix decided to release their game earlier than I expected. I'm of the ever wait for the nifty thing coming up soon type, so I need to choose a milestone to trigger my computer upgrades. In...

    GTX460 "review"

Yep, or for AMD prices to adjust themselves. I'm buying only at the end of August, so channels should be filled and prices stabilized.

Charlie goes nuts over GTX460 launch?

I think it's the editor who smelled opportunity. That being said, it's obviously purposely timed with the GTX 460 release and shows that even Charlie cannot find something bad to say about that very good looking release.

    GTX460 "review"

The 1GB version is, but it won't be much available yet. When it is, if AMD does not reduce the MSRP on the 5850, then I agree with you. The answer is not as clear if they do, however.

    GTX460 "review"

Good part: We might get a price war now that we have nice competition Bad part: Competition means alternatives, implying choice, meaning I no longer know if I should go SLI GTX460, XFire 5850 (for much more $) or single 5870 and XFire later if needed... All in all, I'm very pleased with the...

Looking for SSD under $300 and 100+ gig

Oooh, nice one. Twice the sustained write speed, just from the MLC quality? Anyway, let hope that little newcomer price pushes the Vertex 2. I wonder where Anand is, we need a regular SSD update and benchmarking for that new G.Skill offering. I'd also like to know if a lot of SandForce drives...

The new G.Skill Phoenix is also a good choice, a tad cheaper and matches the Vertex 2 is many benches.

    XFX 5770 Issues - Artifacts?

In dual mode, do you always connect the same monitor to the same port? If so, try switching, it should settle if the problem is with the monitor or the card (or one of its DisplayPort/DVI port anyway).

    3D ready LCD monitor selection

Thanks for the information. The OptX is only $90 most expensive in Canada, cannot find the Samsung in stock on newegg, so I guess I might get my first Alienware part ever. I hope the GTX 460 lives up to the expectations.

Case size, heatsink and side fan question

Which else do you have to propose? I don't, indeed, have so much knowledge in cases. I assume Lian Li? I know it's blasphemy, but I find them quite generic. Or maybe the WiNDy? After being actively working on starting to ship cases in March during February and March, then actively working to...

Case size, heatsink and side fan question

Case size, heatsink and side fan question

Alright, I'll try to control myself. Money for that build is really not really an issue so I'll see about the fan choice. Thanks for the fan controller suggestion, I've been looking for one of these.

    3D ready LCD monitor selection

Hi all, I'm building a new rig and want to partially hop in the 3D bandwagon. I might not get the glasses right away since I want to see how 3rd party vendor for ATI card play out and such, but I would like to get a 3D ready monitor just in case. Furthermore 120 Hz is never bad imho. Anyway...

Case size, heatsink and side fan question

Thanks for the information, it's very useful. I might have to reconsider the desk part and give special precaution against dust. Thanks for the fan suggestion as well. If replacing them, however, wouldn't Scythe GT be a better choice? From the way everyone speak of them, they sound pretty...

Case size, heatsink and side fan question

Hi all, I'm currently in the process of choosing pieces for a new rig and the case and heatsink choice are proving to be the most difficult. I prefer mid tower, but I'm not adamant about it and I really like the military/industrial look of the Coolermaster Scout and the HAF X. However, since...

can ati cards run 3d content

I don't think so. Auto-stereoscopy works for one user only, unless both all people are really close to each others and have the same eye movements. Glasses requires multiple sets, but at least it's possible. Unless the future is one TV per person, I don't see glasses-less 3D gaining on anything...

    Final Fantasy XIV online!

Gee, that benchmark is über crappy after all: no XFire/SLI, windowed and some posters think that it's CPU bound because their GPU never went up to 100%. I hope they rushed it and they're going to release a new version. It's sad that an official benchmark has so many shortcomings... Thanks for...

    Final Fantasy XIV online!

http://www.eorzeapedia.com/ is the best source of information I've found so far. PC is going to support 1080p (and hopefully higher vertical resolution as well), PS3 is limited to 720p. PC version is also going to support Eyefinity/Surround (very high horizontal resolution), 3D is still unsure...

Dupont Delivers OLED technology scalable to Television

I think he meant that in a LCD x1200 display, the RGD diodes are beside each others, so let say each is 1mm arranged in a line, you get 3mm for the pixel. Imagine the same size for an organic diode, but stacking them, you get the full pixel at 1mm size instead of three, effectively allowing 3...

Why C is terrible, and Java/C# are Great

I'd say C++ is way more arcane than C. I find C syntax quite clean. One improvement that Java has over it is the lack of explicit pointer however. C# also limit pointer usages making it a bit simpler as well. Multiplatform. As for memory management, you also have SoftReference in Java which...
