Hey guys. I just used one of the codes last night and created an account. This morning was playing and got a toon to level 5 and logged out. Several hours later, fire it back up and i have no character. What gives? is this normal with the free play?

Sounds to me that you'll be able to go straight to the boss through the finder instead of going from start to finish through the whole dungeon to get to him/her. For instance, the Pilgrim's world event. The boss for that was at the very end. I hope that's what they are saying.
