1. I have done it on a T61, so I imagine it will work fine on a T60 too.
2. If you let the Windows 7 installation process handle the partioning and formatting of the drive the correct alignment will applied automatically.
3. Set the BIOS to AHCI before the OS installation and DO NOT change...
I would suggest using the /r switch instead, then all readable information will be recovered.

That difference is actually probably bigger than between SATA-1 and SATA-2 speeds, especially if you do more than one thing at a time (NCQ really helps when the disk is handling multiple requests).

If you can: Go ahead and buy a new controller. But beware, most cheap add-on controller cards are considerably slower...
I have Intel X25-M G2 SSD's in two machines, one of them only have a SATA-1 controller. There is a difference in speed when sequential reading big chunks, like when booting the OS, but it's only around 25%.

Even though 15k SAS-drives are considerably faster than VelociRaptors they are still left in the dust when compared to a fast SSD.
You mention that you consider a SSD from OCZ, but don't say which one. Make sure it's based on Indilinx Barefoot (Vertex and Agility), the ones based on JMicron...

I upgraded an old ThinkPad T61 from HDD to SSD (Intel X25-M G2) and Windows 7 boottime went from well over a minute to 20 seconds. Starting Word used to take 8 seconds now it takes 2. Everything is much more responsive, especially database operations.
Sorry, but I figure that there are many users that thinks that version 4.0 of HDDErase is a better choice since it's more recent and maybe you had found it since last time.

Apart from those terrible drives produced in the beginning of the decade IBM/Hitachi have always produced top notch drives. (IBM even invented/introduced the HDD in 1956.)
I have used IBM/Hitachi since the beginning of the 80's and they have given me much less problems than Seagate or WD.

I have a 2-year old ThinkPad T61 with the same limitation, only SATA-1.
I replaced the original HDD with an Intel X25-M G2 160GB. Boot time for Windows 7 went from 1 minute to 20 seconds. Starting Word (2007) went from 8 seconds to 2.
