Thanks for all the math! A couple of things to clear up:
The Forester is a Forester Limited, which should have a higher KBB value than what was calculated. I'm showing $13,500 for a dealer trade-in for good condition and over 15k private sale.
Civic lease is 35 payments, first payment is...
Again, let's not get hung up on the Van. The original question was not about selling the van. But for what it's worth, the van is worth more than that. It's the SXT 30 year version
You do know that there are 2016 year vehicles out now, right? Just because a vehicle is labeled "2009 Forester" doesn't mean it was purchased in 2009. 2015-2008 = 7 years.
Payoff on the lease is a little under 12k. So, I make 7,000 in payments during the lease, and then if I were to use the money I saved during the lease to buy the civic, that'd be 7400. That'd make the remaining payoff 4600 (12,000 - 7400). If I have $1000 of extra maintenance costs with the...
So I decided to run some numbers. The cost of the lease is $7000 (0 first month payment). If I were to put aside the money I'd save each month, I'd have $7400 in extra savings over those 3 years (not factoring in any interest). The difference in gas mileage basically negates monthly lease sales...
That's what I intend to do. By "big" maintenance, I meant something other than oil change and tire rotation. Perhaps this was not the best choice of words. The biggest upcoming expense for the Subaru will be new tires. It should take me about 2 years to get to 60k.
I typically buy new with the intent to keep for 7-10 years. It's what I did with the Subaru and what I plan to do with the Dodge (unless there are major issues, we plan on keeping it for 10 years).
If I was in a bind and had to get more cash, then sure, I'd consider selling the van. What I'm...
Rated "Very Good" by consumer reports. 10k cheaper than comparable Honda and Toyota (although, there is a reason for that). Some people like to buy new cars, if no one did, there wouldn't be any used cars.
I think the main difference is after those 3 years. When that is done, I'd either have to pay 12k (plus tax) to buy the Civic, or go out and purchase/lease another car. If I keep the Subaru, my payment for that vehicle is still $0 a month.
Of course, my original question was about reducing my...
I've been looking on how to reduce bills everywhere and this was the only one that would have any significant monthly savings. We don't have cable/sat TV, and we use Cricket Wireless for cell ($70 a month for 2 lines).
I think I'll probably keep the Subaru. Part of me wants the Civic just for...
I like the idea of going to 1 car. I do take the bus into work, but I drive a couple miles to a parking lot to hop on the bus. There isn't a stop where I live. If it wasn't for the winter months, I could just ride a bike to the bus stop.
The heater and ac is currently at 0%, but only for 12...
Actually, once a tire hits 10 years old or so, they tend to fail, regardless of mileage.

I have not made up my mind... I am leaning towards keeping the Subaru, but haven't decided yet.
I'm just saying a dealer would offer more than 11,500 for the Subaru.
The tires have a good amount to tread left, I just would replace them because they are old, maybe at year 7 or 8. I don't know how the dealer would appraise the tires, but I'd have to believe that they'd expect a Subaru with 50k miles on it would have it's original tires.
I doubt they would...
The next big maintenance on the Subaru is at 60,000 miles:
https://www.driverside.com/service-schedule/detailview/subaru-forester-2009-23568-31464-57717?mileage=60000
It'll also need new tires soon, which will likely cost $500 or more. It all depends if I get the cheapest tires possible or...
Like I said in the first post, it's not critical that we get the bill lower, it would just be nice. We did a 0% loan for 12 months on a new heater and AC and we are making sure we get that paid off in 12 months. This comes out to about 900 a month. 900 a month of extra expense is quite a bit...
I should have mentioned this, but selling the Caravan is not in the cards. Selling the Subaru for a beater would be an option, but would buying a beater be worth the gamble of repair bills vs paying 200 a month (fixed, known value) for a lease? Then there is the value of time. How much is my...
So, ever since we have had to replace both our AC and heater, I've been looking at ways to reduce our monthly bills.
We have 2 vehicles. One is a 2014 Dodge Caravan, and the other is a 2009 Subaru Forester. Payments on the Caravan are about $400 a month with an interest rate of 2.4%. We have...
Howdy!
I am curious if anyone out there is overclocking their G3258 at stock voltage. I am curious if running at 4.0 GHz on stock is a realistic expectation. I'm wanting to get a little bit more performance out of the chip, but don't want to add a lot of heat to my small HTPC case.
Also...
I think I'll do that. Thanks for the help. I already have everything except Mobo, CPU (which I obviously can't buy yet) and RAM. Perhaps I should pick up the motherboard. I'm wanting to make a mini-itx build, so perhap this...
Hmm, perhaps I should just let my coupon expire. These prices are not making me very optimistic. I see that during Black Friday, some of these prices were 40% lower!
Howdy All!
So, I have an ebay coupon that expires Jan 5th and I'm wanting to buy some RAM for an AMD Kaveri build. The chip apparently has graphics as good as a 7750 (amazing for integrated graphics imo), but DDR3 RAM is really going to kill performance. I figure I should get the fastest RAM...
I really like Corsair PSUs. I had a CX430 go bad (most likely due to me overloading it, but calculations show it should have been able to handle the load). The RMA process was great. Simply went to their website, filled out a form. They sent me a new one and I placed the old in the packaging of...
Please explain. How can you be committed to something/someone if you don't have trust in it/them? Wouldn't a lack of trust interfere with your commitment?
Yeah, I am just trying to understand alkemyst's way of thinking. In a previous post it was said that it wasn't a commitment issue, but a way to prepare if there is a divorce. It seems like a commitment issue to me.
If you truly trust your spouse, it shouldn't matter how you have your bank...
Yeah, I don't get how having a joint account is "a lack of trust" issue. I would argue the other way around. If you have to have separate accounts, then that means you don't trust them to stay out of "your" money.
I also find it odd that some people think each "own" the money their job pays...
No idea! Just pointing out differences. It's not just a simple matter of "your costs are re-emmbersed". There are some hidden costs that are hard to put a value on, hence the question :)
The idea would be that one would be able to go home each night.
While the ideal situation for the travel job would be a normal work day (8 hours + lunch), a job that requires travel tends to take more hours to accomplish. If both jobs have the same workload, except one has travel and the...
People that travel a lot are also away from home more. 4 hour travel days most likely will mean that there will be less time at home. A person should be compensated something for that, no? Also, having to be on the road in bad conditions (winter, etc) is more dangerous than being in an office...
I think joint is the way to go. This way, you really have to think about what you want to spend your money on. You both will likely become less impulsive with your money.
My wife and I created sub-savings online with our bank account (one for each). We put an even amount of money each check...
Just had an online chat with them. They say the prescription could take up to 28 days to show up (typically 9-15 days). I might give it a try right after my next refill here in the states.
BTW, the FDA isn't always right. This isn't the drug that I take, but look at this...
Yes,
My insurance has a price-checker and everywhere local charges the same (within 5 bucks). My work pays for a service called "compass" and one service they have is finding the cheapest local place for prescriptions as well. They too cannot find anything reasonably priced.
I have even...
