I just finished up a rejuvenation process on my former PC build circa 2003 to give to my parents as a christmas present of sort.
My machine (I was using it right up until tonight) is a good step up from the Windows 2000 box it will be replacing:

I guess I assumed that if the specs of the mobo say that 1600 is the native memory speed then there is little if any OC'ng going on. I was also assuming that increasing the speed to 1600 doesn't necessarily change anything in CPU-land as far as base clock etc..

However there are a lot of dimm's for sale out there that claim to be i7/i5 compatible but specify 1.65volts to operate...

The Giga p55a ud3 is actually the board I currently have on my wish list if I don't go Intel..
Looking for the following:
- under $200
- raid (though it seems raid is built in to all p55)
- 1394 is a plus but not required
- Single GPU PCIe 2.0 16x

I realize that Asus and Gigabyte are top picks for P55 boards. I've done all the basic homework but I just haven't seen anything said about Intel. I'm wondering if anyone has any opinion regarding Intel's offering.

OK, so after further reading it seems that there really is only one 16x PCIe 2.0 lane on the P55a (maybe this is the same for all P55 boards?) so if you enable USB/SATA 3 the Gigabyte board allocates 8 of the 16 available PCIe 2.0 lanes to it.
...That's lame! why not eat up the PCIe...
