    Asus Router for VPN

Thanks, that's a good link. However, with my current ISP service at 30mbs down and 2mbs up, would I see any benefit of the 86U over the 68U for what I'm going to use it for? I'm a beginner here!

    Asus Router for VPN

I need to setup a VPN tunnel for remote access to an IP camera system. Since Asus routers come with OpenVPN already installed in their firmware, they seem like the logical choice. My question is which one is the best bang for the buck. The three in question are the RT-AC66U, AC68U, and the...

    Win 10 changing digital license

Hope this question makes sense. I have 2 computers running Win 10. Computer A was upgraded to the free copy of Win 10 Pro from an OEM copy of Win 7. Computer B was upgraded to the free Win 10 Home edition by using a key from an old laptop. At this point using the same computers, I would like...

    PoE switch replacement

On my camera system I just added another 4 port POE switch. I've got one 4 port 10/100 POE fed into a 10/100/1000 4 port POE fed on to my router. If starting from scratch I would have gone a 8 port POE but no need to spend more than needed now I guess. If you a managed switch that's another...

    Question on CAT5 and RJ45

You got good advice here but I'll add something. Good practice is to not terminate your CAT5 directly into RJ45 connectors. The CAT5 is usually solid wire. Instead mount a Keystone wall female jack (link above), then use commercially made CAT5 stranded patch cables (male) to your device...

    Kaby lake compatibility

You make a good point and normally I'm in the second group on this kind of thinking. Good power supplies are not that expensive so I think it makes good sense to not take a chance. I'm going to just get new PS that will be good for another 5 years at least. Thanks a bunch for your ideas.

    Kaby lake compatibility

thank you so much for your input, and yes, I'm always interested in as much info as possible. Actually I just looked and the HX520W has been in use for about 8 years. Time flies. But it's always worth a try, and most importantly, wanted to make sure I would not damage any of the new...

    Kaby lake compatibility

Looked on Corsairs web site and don't know how I missed it, but thanks. I was actually more concerned about it working with the i3 CPU. I built an i7 machine last year and thought I saw somewhere that it required specific power supplies that support it, and other "i" series Intel CPU's, but...

    Kaby lake compatibility

Need to replace MB and CPU. Looking at a Kaby Lake i3-7100 and ASRock B250 Pro 4 motherboard. I currently have a 5 year old Corsair HX520W supply that I know will provide sufficient current. Where can I find information as to the compatibility with the CPU and MB? thanks

    NIC for Win 10

My onboard network interface adapter on my desktop recently stopped working. Thinking I could easily replace it with an inexpensive PCI or PCI-E card, I found that these cards offer no support or drivers for Windows 10. what's the deal? Can anyone suggest a NIC that will definitely support...

Printer and I phone loosing connection

AT&T DSL service. I recently changed from 2 Wire gateway to Netgear gateway. Seamless transition except for Brother laser printer and an I Phone. Both will connect to WIFI but after a random period of time (usually about 12 hours on printer and 3 hours on phone) will loose connectivity. If...

    Browser help

I've been happily using Firefox for years, but it seems to be getting slower with each new version. My needs are simple. I just want a fast, uncomplicated browser and would appreciate a suggestion to use with Win 10. There are all kinds of reviews online but again, these change as new...

    Kingston SSD V300

I've got the 850 EVO in a computer I use for my security camera server and it screams. I just don't need any speed in the laptop and that's what got me interested in the Kingston (and the price of course).

    Kingston SSD V300

Thanks for the replys. They apparently have made some changes in this drive since it was originally offered, and based on some of the comments I've read it is not as fast, but does still seem to be reliable. I'm willing to accept that considering the price but I just don't want to get anything...

    Kingston SSD V300

I need a cheap SSD for a cheap HP Intel i3 laptop. Only used for internet and small word processing and spreadsheet. I've read all the negatives about the Kingston V300 series but looks like black Friday will have the 120gb version of this drive at about $35. Question: will I really notice...

    Win 10 sleep issue

After an upgrade to Win 10 I am having issues bring the computer out of sleep mode. I have found this is a fairly common occurrence and I've tried numerous fixes, most relate to power configuration, with no results. The MB is an older 880G+ and Biostar really does not have any Win 10 drivers...

    Another upgrade question

I apologize if this has been covered before. I need to purchase a copy of Win 10 Pro 64 bit OEM for a new build. As there are a few days left for the free Win 7 to Win 10 upgrade could I just purchase Win 7 Pro at a cheaper price than 10 and do the free upgrade?? Not a lot of difference in...

    HDD backup

I downloaded and installed Macrium Free and I'm really impressed. If it does what it says I'd say it beats Acronis. Question on compression: I'm assuming "intelligent sector copy" will copy everything I need for effective restore, eliminating the need to copy unused space on the partition...

    Wireless network printer problem.

Yes, there is a lease expire time but I didn't think this related to static addresses outside the DHCP range. And I do have the static address outside the DHCP range. I did go in last night and change the printer to a new static IP address and as of right now it is still being recognized on...

    Wireless network printer problem.

No, not using MAC reservation. I have not found two different settings in printer. I can turn it off then back on and all is well, and it is still using the same...

    Wireless network printer problem.

Have tried multiple cables. Have not really checked pins in port that well. That's next step if I can't get a wireless connection going. I reserved a range of static addresses in my router and assigned a static addresses in the printer within that range. Is that what you mean?

    Wireless network printer problem.

I agree, but the problem gets more complicated. I have an issue with the ethernet port on the printer. The male connector is not making good connection. It's either the small finger connectors in the port, or a bad solder joint on the board. I have to hold pressure against the ethernet plug...

    IPV6 and new router

AT&T recently supplied me with a new gateway. Within the WIFI setup is a check box to enable/disable IPV6 on my home network. Do I need this enabled? Apparently this just applies to my home network ONLY so will it prevent me from web accessing an IPV6 IP address when and if I need to?

    another GPT question

I have a 1TB boot drive using Win 7 64bit and a 4TB data drive. Obviously the 4TB drive needs to be initialized using GPT to recognize the entire drive in 1 partition. Should the 1TB boot drive also be initialized as GPT, or would MBR be better? Does the boot drive need GPT to boot into UEFI...

    GUID on large HD's

All my old small HD's are IDE interface and my new MB only supports SATA. I would gladly use one if I had it. Since I gotta buy something and don't need a lot of storage a small SSD is going to be about the same price as a cheap HD. Isn't the boot drive still going to be spinning 24/7 since...

URGENT!! Can I put cat6 connectors onto cat7 cable?

Well, the other end will be the cameras. Since there is no movement once installed, I think it's common practice to just put an RJ45 on the end of the solid CAT and go into the camera port. I will definitely use the pre-made stranded at the switch.

    GUID on large HD's

OK, I understand, it's one or the other. Fortunately I have an ASrock MB that uses UEFI. I have since found they even have a utility for setting up large HD's so I'm good to go. I will eventually put a small SSD in for OS and software and just use the 4TB for data. Looks like with no boot...

    GUID on large HD's

URGENT!! Can I put cat6 connectors onto cat7 cable?

OK that makes sense. I thought about the solid cable issue after I posted and assumed that was what make the install "in spec". I have been fine with just running the solid out of the wall but it's in situations where the cable is never moved. I'm presently installing an IP camera system and...

URGENT!! Can I put cat6 connectors onto cat7 cable?

OK, but it doesn't affect performance, right?? I've pulled very little CAT cable but I've always viewed it as other wiring in that the more the splices or connectors, the more the chance for problems. One thing for sure, the keystone connectors make the installation look better.
