MacOSX missing feature - window tiling/snapping

I use HyperDock. It provides window snapping as well as window previews (Windows 7/8 "Peek") from the dock. It's about $10. I use it every day without thinking, so I have no problem forgoing two quad venti non-fat latte's in trade. ;)

Ubuntu 14.04 sounds like it will be pretty fresh

I don't see anything wrong with Canonical following their own path. It may benefit everyone, just Ubuntu, or Canonical may crash and burn. Progress always comes with risk.

J.River is porting their awesome Media Center to Mac. It is still extremely alpha - the UI is still Windows based, lots of bugs. I know this does nothing for your immediate needs, but their goal is to make it as good as the Windows version. There is no better on that side, so my hopes are high...

Personally, I'm waiting for SSD to come down to less than 1$/GB. IMO, it's still a luxury item. The exception to this is if you can use it to prevent the purchase of an entire new machine (my friend is very happy I had him buy a Crucial M4 for his 2008 MacBook Pro, rather than drop over $1K).

Sorry to read of your troubles. There is no reason, however, to ever have permissions set to world read/write/execute on a directory. Add the group of the directory as a secondary group for the apache user. Tips on security: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/misc/security_tips.html

Reading a RAID Stripe drive

You could at least try the freezer trick with the disks. Put both in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours. Have the new disk in place on the system and formatted prior to taking the disks out. Power it up and if the logical disk comes up, copy away as fast as possible. Oops, just read your last post...

Go ahead and install it (safest would be into a virtual machine first so you dont nuke his existing install); keep it off the network. After you install, download, boot and burn one of these rescue disks and run a virus scan.

Virtual Machine with mic input???

Not sure of other VM software that has that capability. However, your other option is to get a cheap USB sound card. Then set up VirtualBox VM and add the new sound card under USB Device Filters (in USB configuration settings) so it connects to the VM instead of the host OS. I haven't tested...
