Is there any OS/backup software that can fully idle the backup drive when not in use?

The problem is that the disk will be woken up by the OS many times a day for things like file-indexing and anti-virus scanning.

It's a big deal because it's shortening the life of the drive for no reason. If instead of running 1 hour a day it'll wake up multiple times and run a total time of 3 hours I think it's safe to assume its lifetime will be reduced. Maybe not by 3 times, but enough to be an issue. Is there a way...

Wouldn't other periodical activities, such as indexing and anti-virus scanning (among probably many others), also wake up the drive? It's unfortunate if this is the case, because in theory a backup software (with sufficient permissions) could unmount a partition or switch the whole drive to...

I'll try it as soon as I'm home. I would like to use 1080i (for the TV) and 1080p (for the projector), but I've already given up on that because my receiver doesn't support different resolution modes for different HDMI outs. I was hoping to find a way to feed it with 1080i signal, as it's good...

My 15m long HDMI cable (which is connected to my TV through an Onkyo NR709 receiver) doesn't support 1080p. Is there a way to configure AMD Catalyst to always downgrade 1080p to 1080i?

Does anyone still get the AMD 7xxx bug where your monitor doesn't wake up from sleep?

The connection is HDMI on the card and DVI on the monitor. Is that supposed to be the more reliable setup? If so, then it's not working very well for me...

Are there any Samsung writers that support M-Discs? The archival reliability of these discs is supposed to be an order of magnitude (or two) better than regular discs.

I was not aware of M-Discs. Thanks for pointing this out. It seems like a worthwhile feature. This drive from LG also supports it and costs les than the Sony.

It seems there are far more complaints about Killer NICs than complements, which makes it odd that mobo makers are actually putting them in higher end models. I'm looking for a new Z87 board and wondering if I should cross out boards with these NICs and focus on boards with Intel or Realtek...

Note 2 - Alternative Stylus Pens

Yes, that's what I'm talking about (the part in boldface). The tip feels terrible compared to that of an actual pen, or the Palm Pilot stylus. I'd be happy to get rid of the pressure sensitivity for a totally rigid tip.

Note 2 - Alternative Stylus Pens

Anyone know if there's an alternative pen that fits the Note2 for storage, but has a rigid tip (like those of the old Palm Pilot)? The flimsy tip of the Note2 stylus is annoying. I'd rather give up the hovering ability (whatever Samsung calls it) for a more rigid tip.

I was talking about suggestions like the second post in this page. The Belkin/Nostromo are more like what I'm looking for, but reviews from users with large hands are not very positive. That's why the G13 seems more suitable for me.
