My friend checked the SMART data with Hard Disk Sentinel. It all checked out okay. I think I'll advise him to call WD to ask if that buzz is a new feature with the Essential. The new ones now have that odd Smartware FW in the enclosure. I wonder if that might explain the sound when it spins up?
