PS2 DVD isn't by any means "sucky", it is definitely watchable.. And future firmware updates might increase the quality - although I really doubt it.
Better than VHS - but NOT as good as dedicated console players. It has a somewhat grainy look to it, but it isn't horrible...

Make sure you get an HDTV - they just recently have been brought down to normal price ranges. I guarantee the supreme quality will have much more value than the 10 or so extra inches you could get for the same money.
