I have the same problems as you mentioned. I've been trying to resolve these problems...so far - no luck. If you find a solution, please share.
For OSX 10.5.4, can you perform an "Software Update" (via apple kernel)?

Sorry. I tried the harddrive boot method in the guide form mechdrew. Couldn't make it to boot. So, I burnt a DVD and booted off a USB DVD. I worked.
