Backup just to have another safe copy of files

Free version of Crashplan will allow you to automatically backup certain folders to an external USB or network location automatically. I believe this is what you're looking for. Just be aware of the limitations of the free version which only does once a day backup vs continuous for paid version...

Server adapter = NIC?

Careful with some of the third party amazon sellers. Most of them sell fake Intel NICs. Also the adapter you link to isn't the latest Intel one's, they are well supported but I believe EOL. The Verge's review of any Apple product is fairly predictable. Take the highest score they have given to current competing product and score the Apple product 1-3 higher. If a product is better in one area downplayed it's importance or give the ole "you'd be happy with any one of these" routine.

LSI 9260-4i connects up to 128 SATA/SAS devices?
