Using a 9 pin serial (RS-232) mouse with Windows 7 laptop (Resolved)

As the proud owner of 2 D630s as basic use machines, have you considered getting a USB PC card? Those should be reasonably easy to find more cheaply than a serial mouse and lets you use a current mouse. In fact, I have a firewire+USB 2.0 cardbus card that would do exactly that.

nVidia GT 1030 - Best low profile single-slot GPU that requires no supplemental power, for 4K?

J3455 vs N3700 for the NUC?

I have the J3455 NUC. You get other benefits like 10-bit HEVC decoding and proper 4k support (HDMI 2.0). If you're worried about noise, I personally can't hear it when watching video files from even a few feet away, and it also has a semi passive mode so it runs silent below a certain temperature.

3TB Seagate - another one bites the dust!

What do you think the specs will be on the next high performance 2.5" HDD?

No laptop or desktop owner should need to bear the pain that is spinning hard drives as a primary drive. The only acceptable moving parts in laptops today should be semi-passive cooling and maybe optical drives, and those too need to disappear eventually.

Since you mention you tested with the 6205, I forgot to mention that some of my laptops have the 5300, and easily got over 100mbps for transfers at close range with the C7. I think you need to make sure you enable WMM or you might get stuck with A/G performance which your numbers resemble.

Dlink DIR 655 vs newer offerings

I'm not convinced such a device can be made in an economically sound matter. It seems like most aspects of addressing the performance problem of spinners or the cost problem of SSDs will result in a product that has mediocre capacity compared to a mainstream spinner drive, still be way slower...

When reconnecting HDDs, do i need to use same SATA ports?

I don't recall ever having a problem. It might get redetected when you login, but drive letters etc. won't be impacted. The only thing you should check is that your BIOS still knows which drive to choose first. If it tied order to the port, it might try to boot off the wrong drive and get stuck.

Recommendation for low profile USB 3 PCIe card? D-Link gives me BSOD.

I got one ages ago from startech and it was one of the initial NEC chips. I've run it on an H67 system for over 4 years with no issues in Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2.

I'm not an engineer, but I also drew high level conclusions from the fact that the current and voltage requirements are greater for a 3.5" drive than a 2.5" drive and so would follow for a 5.25" drive vs a 3.5" drive. Then there's vibration/noise. I'd say the main attraction is more storage...

I don't know what makes the updates so cpu dependent. I've seen the same thing and other than the initial period when it downloads updates and extracts them which is noticeably faster with an SSD (and less intrusive to other tasks if you're not already CPU bound), the update process pegs one...

The 2009 figures would probably have looked better with the Intel SSDs available at the time too. The gap between any of these SSDs and a spinner is where the real benefit is because in many typical use cases, all SSDs can react about as fast as the user, while the spinner will fall behind...

Exactly - my parents ran out of space on their 80GB boot SSD this year because they had downloaded a ton of photos from their cameras. Moving their personal folders is annoying. Fortunately, I was in town and had a spare 160GB SSD so they're back to half full, plus 2x80GB of spare SSD storage...

Motherboard problem or PSU malfunction?

Same here, having had a couple of RMAs for that kind of thing. The only time I've wrecked a PSU was when I purposely stuck a screwdriver into the fan vent to see how much noise it was contributing. Got a huge spark, blew the PSU, but the motherboard survived. That was stupid on my part.

Selling used computer memory

Unfortunately for most purposes it's pretty useless. I don't know what kinds you're talking about but I have sticks of ddr and ddr2 around 256mb-1gb which aren't worth the time waiting to find a buyer for.

Is CoreTemp now Adware?

The zip file is pretty tricky to find, but as of RC6 it was still there. I run it standalone without the installer and I don't think it's got any malware. It slows down logoff but is otherwise ok. I can zip it up if anyone wants.

If you still haven't jumped on the SSD bandwagon - now is the time!

People take for granted how cheap this type of upgrade is. I have a mix of used and new SSDs and as long as you get a solid model, the only major issue for older used drives is capacity, since 64/80GB is fairly borderline. I think the sweet spot is the 160GB G2/G3 drives. It's not necessary...

What Drive to get Red, Green or Other

My greens are older (1-1.5TB from around 2009) but still working. However, the head parking does make an annoying click whenever I access files after an idle period. I have since added two 3TB reds and much prefer them from a noise perspective.

For $20 or less you can get them from a legit buyer (saw one on dell.ca for $20, and should be cheaper in the US) with a warranty and easier money back. Usually, you get what you pay for and for a few bucks, wouldn't think it's worth the trouble.
