I can't decide if a SFF barebones is worth ~$300

One internal 3.5 bay for a hard drive, one accessible 3.5 drive bay for something like a floppy, ZIP drive, card reader, etc. (or another hard drive).

Apple.. or Gateway ?

Software should be "easier to find" with the Gateway since it's Windows. Also more games. You can probably save some of the cost off the Apple if you add some additional RAM yourself after you get it. Same with the Gateway.

I should be eating dinner... Used cars are a better deal if you can afford the financing since the typical new car loses $10k+ in value the first year. However, used cars don't get the good financing or the same warranties. A compromise would be a certified used vehicle that has a warranty...

Shuttle SN45G won't boot

So I'm not the only one who's having this problem today. Before your computer died, did you have your RAM voltage set to 2.7v? If you did, you probably fried your board (that's what I did). There a known issue with these boards where if you set the RAM voltage to 2.7v the board will kill...

I think I may have responded to a similar post elsewhere but... here goes... Chrome Orbs are known to do bad things to socket A CPUs. If you have your mind set on using an Orb, use the Chrome Orb instead. The Chrome Orb is designed for socket A's, so there is a smaller chance of destroying...

Why wont my Duron go overclock very much??? potential dud???

If you connect the L7 bridges, then the CPU will run at 1.85v. (The L7 bridges determine the "default" voltage that it will tell the mobo that it needs.)

The Chrome Orb is the one that is designed for the Socket A CPUs. However, its performance is not the best. However, at the same time, for the Duron, it should be OK, unless you do some serious overclocking (like voltage modifications).

Fajar, You can diregard DarkMajiq's suggestion. (Not that it's wrong. It is correct. Just doesn't apply to you). What you will need to do is either modify your board in accordance to said diagrams, or you can try to manually modify the bridges on the CPU so that you can get the desired...

Acorp makes some pretty weird boards. I don't have one myself, so I don't know exactly what to think. Nice sunflower pic on the box ;) My brother has one of these. Seems to run fine.

Overclocking a Tbird 850- voltages???

With decent cooling, almost all socket A chips run fine at 1.85v. I say almost all because there probably is one out there that wil fail (ie a dud), though I haven't heard of one yet.

Now that I read some more stuff, I think one of the big reasons why you can't get too far is that (as you mentioned in another thread), you are running without any thermal compound. This is prety dangerous. Prolly a better idea to lay off things for a while.

run ram high or run FSB high

Its worth a try to see how much you can pump up the FSB first. If your gains are huge, then go with the faster FSB and slightly slower RAM. If you get negligible FSB increase, then stick with the faster RAM setting.

Agreed. I wouldn't have any qualms about using the VIA chipset for workstations, but for a reliable server, I'm a bit shaky. Sure, my VIA board has been up for over two months no reboots, but still... its not as proven in server apps.

Motherboard/CPU Temperature Help...Pleez...

Usually, if your mobo has temperature monitoring ability, you can check it from the BIOS. Some boards also have software available from theeir website that can be used to check temperatures within Windows. Check you BIOS and you mobo manufacturer for details.

Overview: Up the FSB and as far as you can while maintaining stability. Up the voltage to help this along while keeping temperatures within a reasonable range. Yes, it can be reversed, assuming you do not proceed too quickly and destroy your hardware.

a few win2k/98 dual boot questions...

1) Not sure. I think Win2k server needs NTFS, which would mean that Win98 will not be able to cosexist on the same partition. 2) With Win2k, Win98 can be on D and it will usually not complain. But like I said above, I think server requires NTFS, so the C drive must be FAT(32) so that Win98...

How to tell if its a thunderbird

I think what you meant to say was that they don't make socket athlon classics. If it is a socket CPU and it says Athlon, it is a TBird. If it is a slot TBird, I'm not sure how you can tell the difference.

Multiplier won't do x.5

It means that you did not connect the bridges well enough. If you connect some of the bridges, you will have access to some of the multipliers. However, if you do not do all of them correctly, you will lose some multipliers. Erase and try again.
