DEAD - Computer Geeks pre-Memorial Day Sale - Over 250 items

Heh. They also have some HOT legacy crap... like 32MB PC66 DIMMs and a sweet ISA sound card. Quite a few Slot 1 CPUs too. It truly is memorial day.

Pictures of a sunset over Lake Erie *PICS*

Tip: If you're having trouble with picking the right exposure, shoot in RAW mode. That way you can adjust the exposure later... as many times as you want. Tip2: You may actually want to take the shots underexposed. That should give you a bit more contrast. GO BROWNS! (so sad...) -...

think it's better to buy a digital rebel, body only? or with the kit?

The kit lens is a good starter lens and also an OK lens if you plan on using only a single lens. It's lightweight, fairly fast in focusing, and not fancy enough for you to worry about breaking it. On the other hand, there are better lenses out there - even in the cheap lens category. For...

Thin, Light, Powerful Notebooks (not ultraportable) opinions

In my limited experience with Thinkpads, I've been very happy. I've heard good things from others too. As for Dell and HP, my company has used them for the past few years so here's my comments on those: Dell: Look OK, but not durable by any stretch of the imagination. We don't buy these...

With the advent of Open Office 2.0...

I'd still be happy with MS Word 5.1a that I used waaaay back when. As for OpenOffice, I haven't tried it. I have tried StarOffice for a while (it's predecessor) and it was pretty slow. Since the package still runs on Java, I can't imagine it being quite as fast as MS Office (I can't believe I...

    Apple.. or Gateway ?

Software should be "easier to find" with the Gateway since it's Windows. Also more games. You can probably save some of the cost off the Apple if you add some additional RAM yourself after you get it. Same with the Gateway.

Buying a car, used or new? Thats the question?

I should be eating dinner... Used cars are a better deal if you can afford the financing since the typical new car loses $10k+ in value the first year. However, used cars don't get the good financing or the same warranties. A compromise would be a certified used vehicle that has a warranty...

I can't decide if a SFF barebones is worth ~$300

It's really up to you. When I was in school I was in a tiny room and I still managed to have two towers plus a laptop.... all on 24/7 (for Team Anandtech). Now I've graduated and I have a ton more space but I have an SFF. My opinion: I like the SFF because it's quieter and because the...

    Shuttle SN45G won't boot

So I'm not the only one who's having this problem today. Before your computer died, did you have your RAM voltage set to 2.7v? If you did, you probably fried your board (that's what I did). There a known issue with these boards where if you set the RAM voltage to 2.7v the board will kill...

golden orb on Epox 8KTA+(Duron 650?)

I think I may have responded to a similar post elsewhere but... here goes... Chrome Orbs are known to do bad things to socket A CPUs. If you have your mind set on using an Orb, use the Chrome Orb instead. The Chrome Orb is designed for socket A's, so there is a smaller chance of destroying...

Why wont my Duron go overclock very much??? potential dud???

If you connect the L7 bridges, then the CPU will run at 1.85v. (The L7 bridges determine the "default" voltage that it will tell the mobo that it needs.)

    golden orb on Duron?

The Chrome Orb is the one that is designed for the Socket A CPUs. However, its performance is not the best. However, at the same time, for the Duron, it should be OK, unless you do some serious overclocking (like voltage modifications).

    Duron multiplier setting manually!

Fajar, You can diregard DarkMajiq's suggestion. (Not that it's wrong. It is correct. Just doesn't apply to you). What you will need to do is either modify your board in accordance to said diagrams, or you can try to manually modify the bridges on the CPU so that you can get the desired...

Intel serverworks or Via chip set

Acorp makes some pretty weird boards. I don't have one myself, so I don't know exactly what to think. Nice sunflower pic on the box ;) My brother has one of these. Seems to run fine.

    Overclocking a Tbird 850- voltages???

With decent cooling, almost all socket A chips run fine at 1.85v. I say almost all because there probably is one out there that wil fail (ie a dud), though I haven't heard of one yet.

Why wont my Duron go overclock very much??? potential dud???

Now that I read some more stuff, I think one of the big reasons why you can't get too far is that (as you mentioned in another thread), you are running without any thermal compound. This is prety dangerous. Prolly a better idea to lay off things for a while.

run ram high or run FSB high

Its worth a try to see how much you can pump up the FSB first. If your gains are huge, then go with the faster FSB and slightly slower RAM. If you get negligible FSB increase, then stick with the faster RAM setting.

Why wont my Duron go overclock very much??? potential dud???

To answer the question that was never answered: > Is unlocking all or nothing... No, it is not. Its possible to only unlock certain multipliers if you do no properly connect all the bridges. This might be your problem. As for you FSB, if it runs at 110, it runs at 110. The thing that would...

Intel serverworks or Via chip set

Agreed. I wouldn't have any qualms about using the VIA chipset for workstations, but for a reliable server, I'm a bit shaky. Sure, my VIA board has been up for over two months no reboots, but still... its not as proven in server apps.

    Motherboard/CPU Temperature Help...Pleez...

Usually, if your mobo has temperature monitoring ability, you can check it from the BIOS. Some boards also have software available from theeir website that can be used to check temperatures within Windows. Check you BIOS and you mobo manufacturer for details.

Overclocking a AMD Tbird for the first time.....Help =)

You take off the CPU first. You will notice that there are several sets of bridges on the top of it. There should be a set of four that are labeled "L1". Connect these bridges using a pencil or conductive pen or a defogger repair kit. You would probably want to use a pencil the...

    Asus A7V - Easy 2 OverClock?

Perhaps you should have looks around the forums a bit before asking... Anyway, I just woke up so I'm willing to type a bit more. ;) What you need to do is unlock your CPU first. This would require you to open up the computer, take out the CPU, and connect the 4 small L1 bridges that are...

    General Overview of Overclocking...

Overview: Up the FSB and as far as you can while maintaining stability. Up the voltage to help this along while keeping temperatures within a reasonable range. Yes, it can be reversed, assuming you do not proceed too quickly and destroy your hardware.

    Best looking heatsink/fan combo?

Oh I got it. Get an Alpha and buy it with a fan that has a grille on it. Attach it so that it sucks out air. Then, you get some flourescent plastic strips and attach them to the grill so that when you turn the fan on they'll wave around and look all pretty. For added effect, put a blacklight...

a few win2k/98 dual boot questions...

    1) Not sure. I think Win2k server needs NTFS, which would mean that Win98 will not be able to cosexist on the same partition. 2) With Win2k, Win98 can be on D and it will usually not complain. But like I said above, I think server requires NTFS, so the C drive must be FAT(32) so that Win98...

IS FLASHING BIOS RISKY????? NEED URGENT GUIDANCE

Oh yeah, there are also certain manufacturers who have two BIOS chips on-board, so if one gets fried, you'll still have another one to use till you get the other one replaced (if you get the other one replaced).
  34. P

    Just an easy question...

All the socket A chips are double pumped, meaning that on a 100FSB, they run at 200. The KT133A is not DDR, so when you run at 133FSB, the only thing that is 266 is the CPU. Everything else, including the memory, is 133. On the DDR boards, the memory is double pumped too, meaning that the RAM...

How to tell if its a thunderbird

I think what you meant to say was that they don't make socket athlon classics. If it is a socket CPU and it says Athlon, it is a TBird. If it is a slot TBird, I'm not sure how you can tell the difference.
  36. P

ok, this is really starting to annoy me: Pro2A w/ duron 600

Yes, connecting the L7s will make the board think that the chip requires 1.85v.

    Multiplier won't do x.5

It means that you did not connect the bridges well enough. If you connect some of the bridges, you will have access to some of the multipliers. However, if you do not do all of them correctly, you will lose some multipliers. Erase and try again.

IS FLASHING BIOS RISKY????? NEED URGENT GUIDANCE

Agreed. Yes, its potentially dangerous, but only if you lose power while you're doing it (so if you live in Cali, it might not be a good idea) or if you're a jacka$$ and turn the power off since you think it stalled when it in fact did not. As for the utilities that run in windows, I...

    Best looking heatsink/fan combo?

The orbs are the only ones that are sorta stylish. However, their performance is not really up to the challenge of cooling a 1.1GHz Tbird. Like Mikewarrior (mr. cooling guru) says, the super orb is the only orb that you would even consider putting on your CPU. Personally, I'd go with...
