Reduced screen brightness with clean install (XPS 12)

After a clean install of Windows 8 on my XPS 12 my display brightness is lower than it was before. The brightness slider still functions fully, but every brightness stage is dimmer than it was previously. I have installed the latest available Intel HD Graphics drivers from Dell and updated the...

R9 290X memory clock causing lag in flash video playback

Actually I don't think it is the memory clock, since it's going up and down while watching a live twitch stream, but there's no lag. Probably just some other form of driver issue. I'll try reinstalling.

R9 290X memory clock causing lag in flash video playback

Yeah, it downclocks to 150MHz idle at stock, and that's fine. I just can't understand why it has suddenly started failing to clock up properly with some flash videos (but not others).

R9 290X memory clock causing lag in flash video playback

So my PC has randomly started lagging when playing back some flash videos in my web browser. Bizarrely it happens with twitch VODs, and some YouTube videos, but not live twitch or other YouTube videos. The issue seems to be that the memory clock randomly downclocks to 150MHz for no apparent...

Windows cannot detect graphics adapters of any kind

So I was happily using my R9 290X up until today when I reapplied the patches and CRU tweaks to allow my Korean monitor to use 120Hz, as I have done on several occasions after updating drivers. In my impatience I used a utility to restart my graphics driver (linked on the custom resolution...

    R9 290X Idle Core Clock At 100%

For some reason my R9 290X has recently started to idle at 1030MHz core clock (maximum value at stock clocks), or around 1050MHz when overclocked to 1125MHz. The memory is successfully downclocking to 150MHz and ramping up to 1250MHz when needed, but the core remains entirely unchanged after...

    i5 4670k downclocking randomly

Yep, sorted! It was the Windows power state that had somehow ended up set to power save, which meant it favored downclocking the CPU rather than increasing the CPU fan speed. I have genuinely no idea how that happened, since I haven't even been into the power management screen since putting this...

    i5 4670k downclocking randomly

Thanks for the advice, I'm actually just reading your comment after rebooting into windows after disabling speedstep. I know for certain that my my mem and core clocks were both at full, since they were constantly at max value in GPU-Z, and I disabled all downclocking via Powerplay. That...

    i5 4670k downclocking randomly

More updates ahoy! So I've managed to force my GPU clocks to maximum using MSI Afterburner alternative overclocking without powerplay support (for the record this is a terrible idea for normal usage, since it uses a ton of power and results in idle temps of nearly 60 degrees). This isolates the...

    i5 4670k downclocking randomly

You see, I had kind of assumed it was a GPU issue earlier, until I saw the huge lag spikes in game with the CPU dropping to 800MHz. As it stands though I think you're right. My R9 290X is idling at 1030MHz core (which is totally inexplicable, since it should be 425MHz at idle) and 150MHz...

    i5 4670k downclocking randomly

So my i5 4670k that I got last week has started exhibiting some weird behaviour, causing me a ton of lag. It's downclocking to around 800Mhz frequently, which causes lag doing almost anything. Moving windows around, even scrolling can end up lagging while the chip does it. In game it clocks...

R9 290X dynamic clock speed shenanigans

I don't have any profiles set in MSI Afterburner, so I can't disable 3D clocks. All the clock speeds are controlled by powerplay. The weird thing is that this wasn't happening initially when I got my card a week ago. It just seems to be happening in the last couple of days.

R9 290X dynamic clock speed shenanigans

So I've noticed that in the past few days my R9 290X has been behaving weirdly. Core clock seems to sit at 1030MHz 100% of the time, except when I'm overclocked, where it idles at about 1050MHz and jumps up to 1125MHz at load. Memory clock is similarly strange. 90% of the time it's at...

ASRock Z87E ITX hard drive detection

So I just put together my new mITX build using an ASRock Z87E ITX mobo. Everything is going great, except I can't seem to detect my two secondary hard drives (carried over from my last build) in windows. I'm using an mSATA SSD as my boot drive, and that works perfectly. However my secondary...

CPU coolers - is there anything worthwhile between £20-£50?

You don't by any chance have an AMD stock cooler? I recall mine being hideously loud. I think your best bet is getting the True Spirit 140. It's very cheap for the thermal performance, and the acoustics compare very favorably to other coolers. Here are a couple of reviews: RWLabs and HardOCP.

CPU coolers - is there anything worthwhile between £20-£50?

The Hyper 212 Evo would be fine for the overclock that you're looking at, and is pretty cheap. There are a few other decent options in that price range. I've looked at the Thermalright True Spirit 140 (£31 from Scan), Thermalright Mach HR-02 (£38 from Scan) and Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

I just threw an old Akasa 120mm fan I had lying around on the Hyper 212+. I was only testing at 4.4ghz w/ 1.35Vcore and saw temps of 70 (+/-2) degrees, so it doesn't seem to have made a great deal of difference. I'm thinking that I'll probably get an H100 soon after Christmas.

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

I'm wondering whether to upgrade my heatsink. I'd been considering it anyway, particularly as Intel's newer chips run hotter than Sandy did. I'm looking at the Thermalright Silver Arrow (£50 from Scan with free delivery) or the Corsair H100 (£60 delivered refurb at Ebuyer). I'd jump on the...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

I broke 4.5ghz! It turns out (unsurprisingly) that the answer was more voltage. I'm currently at 4.5ghz with 1.40v VCore, 5 step LLC and PLL overvoltage on. 4.6ghz booted at these settings, but failed Prime95 after 5-10mins, so I assume it would require 1.41-1.42v. The downside to this is that...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

I've tested up to 1.38VCore (with 5 step LLC, which seems to pretty much negate vdroop), with and without PLL overvoltage on. All the power options: C1, C3/C6, EIST, Thermal monitoring etc. are disabled. Real time ratio changes in OS are disabled. I've never played around with system agent...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

Thanks a lot for the advice about the RAM and god damn, that's quite the chip you have there. Unfortunately 4.5ghz is still elusive though. It's so bad that my motherboard won't even boot into the BIOS with 4.5ghz and 1.38VCore, forcing me to clear the CMOS by shorting the jumper. I agree that...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

Nope, I've been doing everything from the BIOS. After moving the RAM sticks everything is fine again! Running Prime95 at 4.4ghz 1.35VCore now without issues. Now I want to see if moving the RAM means I can get to 4.5ghz+ I actually did use Scan for the first time for this case. They're great...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

Thanks for the advice, I never knew that about the RAM. I'm in the UK, so unfortunately no Newegg for me :(. I'm still very happy with the Arc Midi though: it's gorgeous, very easy to work with and cools just as well as my old HAF 932. I haven't really had time to do much, but my PC booted...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

I realize that swapping cases shouldn't have changed anything (Arc Midi is wonderful though), but when I went to turn my PC back on it bootlooped until I turned down the clock speed. I can't fathom why I'm suddenly unable to reach my previous stable clocks. That's an interesting point about the...

    i5 2500k won't overclock properly

Background: I've had an i5 2500k for the last 18 months. It's never overclocked particularly well (never been able to break 4.4ghz, even at 1.35-1.4V VCore) but it's been working fine at 4.4ghz for around a year. Today I moved my computer into a new case (Fractal Design Arc Midi) and all of a...

Overclocks don't stick on Windows 8?

The issues seem to be fixed after a number of system updates today. Both the momentary hangups and CPU frequency reporting are back to normal.

Overclocks don't stick on Windows 8?

Interesting to see that I'm not alone, I guess this is the price we pay for early adoption. I'll probably set things at my normal overclock and leave them there. Judging by the BIOS Windows is just misreporting the values.

Overclocks don't stick on Windows 8?

I'm seeing Speeds of up 3.96ghz with the task manager, despite it reporting a maximum speed of 3.60ghz. CPU Utilization is oddly high (around 5-8% whilst playing music and web browsing) and I've had occasional hangups. I'm going to reset to stock clocks and see what happens.

Overclocks don't stick on Windows 8?

Overclocks don't stick on Windows 8?

I just installed windows 8 this morning and re-applied my overclock settings. The BIOS clearly shows my 2500k is at 4.4ghz in the MIT window, but when I boot into Win8 both CPU-Z and Openhardware monitor show the frequency switching between a range of values from 1.6-3.7 ghz. The frequency...

PC failing to boot after failed sleep

I was attempting to install Windows 8 from the desktop installer, which was producing an error telling me to rename my C:\Users folder. Actually renaming the folder had no effect on the installer, so I figured that maybe because I used regedit to set the default from C:\ to F:\ it was causing...

Overclock issue, i7 2600k/Gigabyte Mobo BIOS

The VCore shown by CPU-Z is inaccurate (the same thing happens to me). I can get an accurate value in HWmonitor (by the same company) under CPU voltage, rather than VCore (which also displays inaccurate values). At the moment CPU-Z shows 1.044V core voltage and HWMonitor shows 1.04 CPUVCore, but...

    i5 2500k 4ghz OC limit?

In case anyone is still interested, I've got things working with a 4.4ghz stable overclock using this guide: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=693613 I think it was disabling EIST that made the difference (although C3/C6 still allows me to throttle back to 1.6ghz at idle).

BSOD with any kind of OC (i5 2500k)

I think that disabling EIST (and possibly C1 states) probably made the difference. I'm now successfully running at 4.4ghz stable, 4.5ghz won't boot so I guess it would need PLL Overvoltage which I would rather avoid.
