Perhaps this is all a bandaid solution? I think the root of the problem still lies in the inefficient 750mb QB database. May need some housekeeping on that.

why does everyone suggest X25E? It doesn't sound like these guys are hardcore database addicts with lots of IOPS. It's just one big file they use; i think a regular X25M or OCZ Vertex drives should suffice.

but it won't have advanced wear leveling and TRIM support from a real SSD controller. So you will wear out the CF cards real fast. CF nand flash is about the cheapest nand they make, won't stand more than a few thousand writes.

Getting an SSD will obviously fix the problem, but maybe not as fast as ramdisk. If you do get SSD, be sure to get one with fast random read/writes like an Intel or Sandforce derivatives (OCZ Vertex 2, Patriot Inferno, Corsair Force, etc). That will alleviate the slowdowns dramatically. I don't...

Any hard info on the new OCZ

Vertex 2 Pro = Vertex 2 in terms of performance. identical. With Pro you get Supercaps for power loss failsafe, and some other enterprise security features. There's really no reason to shell out extra money unless those features are important to you.

booting, loading apps, and games are mostly random reads/writes. sequential is more like moving large blu-ray rips or files around. When games load, they request a whole bunch of small files and i would consider that more random than sequential.

all SF based drives are almost exactly the same. same tech, same algorithms. You should be alright w/o trim, might take a slight performance hit but should level out over time. The new 60/120/240 sized drives are new and on promo right now so they are probably cheaper than the 50/100/200...
