Unless of course you run Paragon Alignment Tool: http://www.paragon-software.com/landing-pages/WhitePapers/paragon_alignment_tool.html Fixes it in a pinch.

    (OWC SSD's) -vs- (OCZ SSD's)

we had this discussion in your earlier thread. Go to that for reference. Quick summary: You will not see any difference between any of the Sandforce SF1200 drives. buy whatever is cheaper, better warranty and support.

Best SSD for a 750MB quickbooks database?

funny how ppl are so quick to make judgements. like i said, as a real businessman, ur job is not to discriminate who your clients are, your goal is to make money. I don't care if you bang your goat in your spare time or make your employees come to work in french maid costumes, as long as you...

    Win7 + (120GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro) -VS- (Intel X25-M G2 160GB)

I think the Anand article I linked to should provide all the info you are looking for. Regardless if you are looking for Vertex 2 or any other SF drive, they should all perform like those listed on his article. I wouldn't count on any particular user's Crystal results as a definitive answer to...

    Win7 + (120GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro) -VS- (Intel X25-M G2 160GB)

I think you are reading into that glowing review a lil too much. Any of the other SandForce drives should bring equal performance as the OWC. Examples include Corsair Force, OCZ Vertex 2/Agility 2, Patriot Inferno, Super Talent TeraDrives etc. They are all essentially clones of each other. To...

Best SSD for a 750MB quickbooks database?

Perhaps this is all a bandaid solution? I think the root of the problem still lies in the inefficient 750mb QB database. May need some housekeeping on that.

Best SSD for a 750MB quickbooks database?

well the client isn't exactly ignoring the advice of the consultant. The consultant is simply working with a limited set of resources from the get go. This is typical of any organization with a limited budget. Consultants are hired to find the best solutions with given constraints, not the other...

Best SSD for a 750MB quickbooks database?

If you had any business sense you would understand that as a consultant your job is not to discriminate clients by size. Not all clients require enterprise level services, charge accordingly.

How much faster is the 100GB Vertex 2 compared to the Intel 80GB SSD Gen.2?

i guess no G2 on hand? It shouldn't matter since she secure erases the G1 before testing.

Best SSD for a 750MB quickbooks database?

why does everyone suggest X25E? It doesn't sound like these guys are hardcore database addicts with lots of IOPS. It's just one big file they use; i think a regular X25M or OCZ Vertex drives should suffice.

Build your own SSD, out of CF cards.

but it won't have advanced wear leveling and TRIM support from a real SSD controller. So you will wear out the CF cards real fast. CF nand flash is about the cheapest nand they make, won't stand more than a few thousand writes.

Best SSD for a 750MB quickbooks database?

Getting an SSD will obviously fix the problem, but maybe not as fast as ramdisk. If you do get SSD, be sure to get one with fast random read/writes like an Intel or Sandforce derivatives (OCZ Vertex 2, Patriot Inferno, Corsair Force, etc). That will alleviate the slowdowns dramatically. I don't...

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=531&Itemid=60&limit=1&limitstart=5 Here's an interesting read about Sandforce firmwares. Seems like OWC uses the SF1200 controller with the regular low-IOPS firmware.

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2829/12 Read that page and you'll understand why i say all SSD vendors practically use the same exact firmware provided by the controller manufacturer (Indilinx). The same case applies to all Sandforce drives. Vendors simply test and repackage the firmware for...

    SSD Upgrade Consideration

booting, loading apps, and games are mostly random reads/writes. sequential is more like moving large blu-ray rips or files around. When games load, they request a whole bunch of small files and i would consider that more random than sequential.

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

OWC benchs well, but so does every other SF SSD. So yes, they are great, but in the grand scheme of things, they are just run of the mill. OCZ has the benefit of better support forum for enthusiasts who purchase these products and better marketing. Really that's all that's separating these SF...

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

Until someone does actual test another SF SSD full in the exact manner you described, I think it's pretty safe to assume all SF SSDs will perform almost identical. Any differences would be statistically insiginificant. By the way, have you figured out what the major difference is between the...

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

I can't seem to find OWC's website with strictly datasheet specs. The one you linked to is more marketing oriented. All those points they list are a rehash of every Sandforce SSD feature set out there. They don't even list the max IOPS number which would give clue to which SF controller/firmware...
  27. K

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

Are you saying OWC has a different fw implementation than the rest of the SF drives? Sandforce does not disclose it's technology to its vendors and any vendor that releases firmware are essentially packaging what SF provided to them. It's a similar situation with the Indilinx drives. Doesn't...

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

all SF based drives are almost exactly the same. same tech, same algorithms. You should be alright w/o trim, might take a slight performance hit but should level out over time. The new 60/120/240 sized drives are new and on promo right now so they are probably cheaper than the 50/100/200...

    SSD Upgrade Consideration

I think raid helps more with sequential read/writes than random read/writes. Hard to say which setup will be faster without head to head comparisons.
  30. K

Crucial vs. OWC SSD for a Mac

The OWC is based on Sandforce SF1200. It does not have active GC, none of the SF derivatives do. They have their own algorithm to handle clean up. But OCZ strongly recommends against heavy benchmarking these new SF1200 drives as it really kills the performance without an active GC mechanism. If...

OCZ Loses Higher IOPS FW exclusivity?

Looks like OCZ Vertex 2 won't be the only game in town with a tweaked SF1200 FW. I think most of the SSD makers are getting legit MP firmware with the higher 15000k IOPS random writes. http://techpowerup.com/123875/G.Skill_Displays_Phoenix_Pro_Series_SSDs.html...

Getting my first SSD ever with my Lenovo lappy. 128GB Kingston SSDNow V?

Kingston uses a revised JMicron controller. Bottom of the barrel in terms of performance. Stay away from it. It's cheap for a reason. Wait till year end when Intel doubles it's capacity and you may score a 160gb for $200-300. Check ebay, you might even get lucky with a 160gb Intel for $300 or...

Based on my needs, what SSD should I get?

games would benefit a lot too on an ssd since all the loading come from the drive. So if that's a concern, figure how much space you will need.

Did you buy an OCZ Solid Series SSD and what was your experience?

Those are bad. Based on the original JMicron controller with stuttering. Solid 2 on the other hand are decent, based on the Indilinx.

Samsung Spinpoint F3 or WD Caviar Blue

I got the Samsung F3 and hardly notice a diff from a prior Hitachi 7200rpm 1TB drive from 2009, yet the F3 blows it away in benchmarks. In terms of speed of HDD, I think most of them are so similar in performance that any diff is only discernable in benchmarks, not in real world. But if you had...
